ABT ONLINE -- TWO YEAR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
(delivered over 3-4 terms, 15-20 months minimum)
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Due to overwhelming demand, many courses are now full. Accordingly, we will not be able to accommodate students wishing full-time timetables until January 2011. Students wishing part-time studies may still be accommodated and should send their request as outlined below.
To start the program as a full-time student in January, apply to enter the program now. Once accepted into the program email abtonline@viu.ca to request a timetable for Spring 2011. Please include the following information in your email.

This program provides thorough, in-depth training in the skills required by today’s office workers in order to be competitive in the job market.
The Applied Business Technology Program offers the following certificate programs:
- Administrative Assistant
- Legal Administrative Assistant (aka Legal Secretary)
- Accounting Assistant (aka Bookkeeper)
- Medical Office Assistant
Current computer software applications are stressed, as well as the traditional skills and knowledge of business English, business calculations, office procedures, customer relations, and strong keyboarding skills.
The program consists of two levels. Level I provides a solid foundation of essential skills; Level II consists of a variety of specialties to support personal career objectives. To receive an ABT certificate, students must pass all courses and maintain a minimum “C” grade average in both Levels I and II of the program.
This program is designed to help you:
- acquire the knowledge and skills for entry-level office positions
- upgrade your existing technology skills
- attain your goals of entering the workforce
- meet your schedule as a full or part-time learner
- earn a certificate at a local college.
Most courses start every month; others have four intakes a year. All courses are led by a college instructor. You will need a computer with Internet access. If you don't have a computer, check in your community at your local library, learning centre, or college.
All courses are subject to enrolment. A low enrolment may be cause for cancelling a particular course. Every effort will be made to register students in the next available course.
