Scholarships & Awards
Scholarship & Award Applications will be available in our "Applications" section, approximately two months prior to deadline dates. Mail or take completed applications to the Financial Aid & Awards Office by the specified deadline dates.
Scholarships and Awards will be selected based on minimum course load requirements, grade point average requirements, specific donor criteria and information provided on the application form.
Published award information is subject to change. Many of the awards are funded by interest earned on endowment funds established by very generous donors. The interest earned for the awards will vary with the financial markets.

SCIENCE & APPLIED SCIENCE PROGRAMS
Al Fowler Memorial Scholarship
1 award, $350; Available to science or technology program students who demonstrate innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit in science or technology, preferably working towards the development of a creative business idea. Students must submit an essay with their application describing in detail how the criteria has been met. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
Biology 491 Research Award
1 award, $500; Available to the top "491" student research project in the Bachelor of Science - Biology program. Selection will be done by faculty who grade the projects and associated presentations. No application necessary. Recipient selected in April, with funds issued in May.
Biology Outstanding Student Award
1 award, $500; Awarded to the top Bachelor of Science graduate, majoring in biology. No application necessary. Recipient selected in February, with funds issued in March.
Canadian Information Processing Society Award
1 award, $200; Available to students who plan to earn a diploma in Computer Technology or a degree in Computer Science at VIU, or another post-secondary institution. Selection is based on academic achievement and financial need. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Proof of registration will be required if attending another institution, with funds issued upon commencement of studies. If attending VIU, funds will be awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
December 6, 1989 Memorial Scholarship
1 award, $200; For academic excellence, available to top female students enrolled in a science or applied science program. No application necessary. Recipient selected in May, with funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
Donald F. Alderdice Memorial Scholarship
1 award, $750; Available to academically strong 3rd year Biology students, in either a Bachelor of Science or Fisheries & Aquaculture program, who will be continuing into 4th year, with career goals or interest in aquatic biology, including marine biology and fisheries and aquaculture. This award is in memory of Donald Alderdice, who devoted his life's work to fisheries research. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
Dr. Andy Spencer Legacy Award
1 award, $500; Available to VIU students who have recently been accepted to, or are currently enrolled in, post-graduate studies at any institution, in any aspect of the marine sciences, and who best exemplifies Andy Spencer's standards of excellence and his curiosity and enthusiasm for science. VIU students who are currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in any discipline of the natural sciences are also encouraged to apply for this award. Complete application must include a detailed cover letter, current CV, and two supporting letters (one of which must be from a research supervisor). Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds will be issued as a cheque upon selection.
Dr. Lloyd A. White & Dr. Karen A. Gallie Science Award
1 award, $500; Available to 3rd or 4th year science students, based on academic achievement and contributions of science knowledge and training to society. Preference will be given to biology students. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
Dr. Tanya Griffiths Doctorate Scholarship
1 award, $500; Available to graduating biology students who have recently been accepted into, or are currently enrolled in a doctorate program in the health, medical or veterinary sciences. Selection will be based on volunteer work, family commitments, extracurricular interest and/or employment during their undergraduate education that have been meaningful to the candidate. VIU biology graduates who have been accepted into a PhD, DVM or MD degree program are also encouraged to apply for this prestigious award. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds issued in June
EBA, A Tetra Tech Company, Award
1 award, $1,000; Available to students enrolled in the environmental sciences, or an Engineering transfer program at VIU, related to the earth sciences. Award is based on academic achievement and financial need. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
Kathryn Caswell Memorial Scholarship
1 award, $1,250; Available to science students for academic achievement. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career in engineering. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by January 15. Funds issued in March.
Lt. Sardar Jagat Singh Manhas & Family Scholarship
1 award, $1,000; Available to students in any program, with preference given to students enrolled in Bachelor of Science. Selection is based on academic excellence. No application necessary. Recipient selected in February, with funds issued in March.
MISTIC Science & Technology Scholarship
1 award, $1,000; Available to students enrolled in a science or technology related program who have researched, developed or created a potentially useful innovation. Applicants will be required to submit a short paper describing the innovation and how it might benefit society. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by January 15. Funds issued in March.
Mosaic IT - Lionel Hennessy Award
1 award, $500; Available to Information Technology students. Awarded to the student who has achieved the highest marks among those students who are changing professions. Selection based on instructor recommendation. No application necessary. Recipient selected in May, with funds issued at graduation.
Municipal Information Systems Association of BC (MISA) Technology Award
1 award, $500; Available to students enrolled in any of the following programs: Bachelor of Science - Computing Science major, Computing Science diploma, or Information Technology & Applied Systems (ITAS) diploma. Selection based on academic achievement and demonstrated leadership. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by January 15. Funds issued in March.
Philip W. Mar Memorial Award
1 award, $500; Available for academic achievement and financial need to science students, (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science or Math), who are continuing at VIU or transferring to UBC. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
Ralph Vernon Memorial Scholarship
1 award, $1,000; Available to students for academic achievement in a first year calculus course, continuing to second year Bachelor of Science, with preference given to female students. No application necessary. Recipient selected in May, with funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
RB Engineering Award
1 award, $1,500; Available to VIU Mariner Athletes who are currently enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year of a Science & Technology program, and who will be continuing to 3rd or 4th year for the upcoming fall semester. Selection will be based on academic excellence. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by April 30. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the fall semester.
Transfer Awards
Students transferring to the University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, or Simon Fraser University, are advised to contact the Financial Aid & Awards office at the respective institution, as each have many "in-house" scholarships and bursaries, some of which are specifically designated for students transferring from regional colleges or universities.
College Transfer Entrance Award to Royal Roads University
1 award, $2,000: Students enrolled at Vancouver Island University who are planning to enter a Royal Roads University undergraduate program, may apply to VIU for a $2,000 tuition credit. An eligible candidate will be able to demonstrate achievement through academic or other preparation in one of our major theme areas: sustainable development, entrepreneurship, empowering leadership, and conflict analysis and management.
A complete application consists of an application form and a one page essay (application form and information available on-line at royalroads.ca/awards). Submit completed application package to the Financial Aid & Awards Office at VIU by the specified due date on the Royal Roads website.
Irving K. Barber Scholarships

Transfer Scholarships
Scholarships of $5,000 are available to students who have completed two years of full-time study and must transfer to another public post-secondary institution in BC to complete their degree. GPA must be at least 3.5 and students must demonstrate exceptional involvement in their school and community.

BC Aboriginal Student Awards
Awards of $1,000 to $5,000 are available to BC residents of Aboriginal ancestry, who have been active in their school or community, and are planning to study in either a certificate, diploma, degree, or approved trades / apprenticeship programs.

Aboriginal Teacher Education Awards
Awards of $5,000 are available to Aboriginal students registered in a teacher education program at a BC University, which leads to certification by the BC Teachers' Council. This includes programs leading to a Developmental Standard Term Certificate in First Nations Language and Culture.

W.L. Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarships
Two classes of Mackenzie King Scholarship are available to graduates of Canadian universities: the Open Scholarship and the Travelling Scholarship. Both are to support graduate study.
- The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere. One Open Scholarship is awarded each year. The value has recently been about $10,000 but it is subject to change.
- The Travelling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations. Recently four scholarships of $11,000 each have been awarded annually, but the number and the amount are subject to change.
