Reporting to the Manger, Continuing Education & Contract Services, instruct BC First Nations Studies 12 and follow the articulated outcomes as listed in the current provincial ABE Articulation Handbook. This course is part of a University and College Entrance Preparation (UCEP) program for Aboriginal students. This course may incorporate guest speakers, field trips and group workshops. Participate as a member of an integrated instructional team consisting of the UCEP Advisory Committee. Liaise with the instructional team, attend UCEP team meetings, keep accurate attendance records, assist with reports as they pertain to the UCEP program, assist with event and field trip planning. Provide individual and group instruction; prepare course materials; student support and tutorial support; student evaluation, grading and record keeping; liaise with student support services; participate as an active member of the instructional team; and participate in staff meetings as required.|
BC First Nations Studies 12 focuses on the diversity, depth and integrity of the cultures of BC's Aboriginal peoples. In emphasising the languages, cultures, and history of First Nations peoples, the course addressed an important part of the history of British Columbia. The course provides an opportunity for students to acquire knowledge and understanding of the traditions, history, and present realities of BC Aboriginal peoples, as well as a chance to consider future challenges and opportunities.|
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success through ongoing professional training, subject currency, and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and department committees; meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution. Proven skills and recent experience working with adult learners; ability to use a wide range of teaching strategies to accommodate the needs of different learners; skills in development of course materials; skill in providing individualized instruction in a group setting; demonstrated interpersonal skills working with students; demonstrated interpersonal skills working with instructors, student support services, staff and administration as a team member; organizational skills. Successful candidate will be responsive to cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles.|
Teacher Training certification. Applicants of Aboriginal ancestry are strongly encourage to apply. Familiarity with VIU and with the Cowichan Valley community partners and resources, knowledge of Cowichan Tribes First Nations community and cultural/traditional practices.|
