Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning is Vancouver Island University's teaching, learning and technology centre. We assist with the implementation of VIU's Academic Plan and work collaboratively with academic faculties and teaching faculty members to promote and support innovation and excellence in learning. We do this by supporting the creation and development of high quality curriculum-supported learning opportunities, through the appropriate integration of research-informed teaching tools, the use of interactive technologies and the promotion of vibrant learning environments.
The Centre has gone through a significant restructuring and redesign over the past three years. We have four key areas we support and service: (1)Teaching, Learning and Pedagogy; (2) Scholarship of Teaching and Learning; (3)Learning Technologies and Innovation and (4)Student Learning and Engagement. Each area functions in an integrative manner within a seamless support model. Faculty and student engagement with the centre is on the rise; 5X increase in past two years.
The Centre is seeking two positions to undertake integrative educational development in all four of our areas. We require experienced applicants with significant teaching experience in post-secondary undergraduate classrooms, especially those with strong reflective and scholarly inquiry components to their practice. In addition, we need people who have had rich experiences working in teaching and learning centres undertaking faculty consultations, classroom observations, curriculum and program design and have a strong grasp of how to effectively facilitate change in teaching and learning. The Centre is positioned well within this teaching-focused institution and we require credible and suitably experienced people to work on diverse projects and initiatives.
Migrate, convert and rebuild 1150 courses from Moodle to Desire2Learn (D2L) involving copying, organizing, renaming and rebuilding courses using computer skills in learning management software.
Support faculty by providing guidance and functionality assistance in learning Desire2Learn and working in their new course environment. Demonstrate program features and course to faculty when releasing the converted course.
Follow checklists and quality control measures to ensure that courses are backed up, converted and rebuilt accurately.
Assist with routine processes for ensuring D2L courses are ready to be activated and accessible to students for learning.
Work closely with three Learning Technologies Support Specialists to ensure that courses are completed within tight deadlines and according to needs and priorities.
Communicate daily with other Online Course Support Assistants to prioritize work and assign duties.
Produce resource materials (handouts, videos) of how to undertake basic operations and functions within the learning management system for faculty to use.
Keep accurate records of completed work using Microsoft Excel.
Answer basic student or faculty email inquiries about D2L such as finding course, logging in and navigating around learning management system environment.
Keep files associated with courses organized using standard naming conventions.
High School diploma plus 6 to 30 credits for courses such Digital Media, Introduction to EManagement, MS Office training, or the Adobe Suite. Up to one year relevant experience that may include work in a Help Desk or Teaching and Learning Centre. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Excellent data entry skills and computer comfort with browsers. Very good file management ability to work with many files, file extensions and file folders. Ability to learn new software programs quickly and be comfortable working within different software. Ability to take direction well and undertake tasks. Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to complete assigned tasks independently and efficiently within prescribed deadlines.|
Moderate to high level of comfort with Microsoft Excel, including copying and pasting and working with multiple spreadsheets.|
