The primary purpose of this role is to enhance the experience of International students at VIU. Reporting to the Manager, International Education Contracts and Group Programs, plan, organize and coordinate ESL and International Academic student orientation sessions each semester. Prepare and present material for student orientations and provide presentations to various groups regarding our Peer Helper Program. Plan, schedule and organize social and recreational activities throughout the semester designed to enhance interaction between international and Canadian students.
Advertise and promote activities to current VIU students through the use of posters, e-mail, social media, and word of mouth. Each semester recruit, train and oversee up to 35 - 40 international student peer helpers and volunteers. Hire, train and supervise student employees each semester. Coordinate the Cultural Connections program which matches International and Canadian students for language and cultural exchange, as well as maintain the Cultural Connections Facebook page.
Update and maintain the International Student Handbook. Liaise with staff, community and students about volunteer opportunities, activity ideas and partnerships. Drive bus, lead and supervise student activities. Assist Manager, International Education Contracts and Group Programs with implementation and scheduling of group activities.
Two-year post-secondary diploma from an appropriately accredited institution. Three to five years recent related experience that can be applied to coordinating, planning, implementing and supervising large events for International and Canadian students, including recreational activities, special events, orientations, volunteer opportunities and presentations for large audiences. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Intermediate-level MS Office skills including: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Comfort interacting with a variety of staff to involve students in events. Successful candidates will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles.|
Must possess a valid Class 4 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).
Valid OFA Level 1 Certificate required (or obtain as per CUPE Letter of Agreement #3).
Diploma in Recreation, Tourism or Hospitality from an appropriately accredited institution. Proficiency in a language other than English.|
