Frequently asked questions:

What is the event?

Art & Photography in the Garden is a unique weekend art show nestled in the magical setting of Milner Gardens & Woodland. The event provides an opportunity for guests to come and mingle with artists while they actively create pieces ofart.

Approximately 24 artists are spread throughout the gardens at assigned stations. Each artist is provided one 10'x10' space with a tent, table and two chairs.

We seek out artists who like to interact with visitors, providing them with a chance to discuss and observe the artist's technique, as well as purchase original artwork and photographs.

A medley of local musicians perform each day. A silent auction made up of quality samples of participating artists' work is held in support of Milner Gardens. Refreshments are available for purchase.

When is the event?

The 2012 event will be held on Saturday July 21st from 10:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday July 22nd from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Artists will be pre-assigned a set up time between 8:00am and 9:30am for the morning of the 21st. No tear down is to occur before 4:00 on the 22nd. Artists can store material in locked, secured buildings on site on the night of the 22nd.

How do I participate?

Artists can apply to participate in the event by filling out an application form. Applications close at end of day March 31st 2012.

Either mail the application to Milner Gardens, 2179 W Island Hwy, Qualicum Beach, V9K 1G1, or email a copy to the Director at geoff.milnergardens@shaw.ca

What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed by a jury with recommendations going to the Milner Garden Director for final decision.

To ensure a rotation of artists, artists will be able to participate for a maximum of three years in a row. After two years' break from the event artists are welcome to re-apply.

Notices of the jury's decisions will be sent out mid-April.

How are spaces assigned?

Artist locations during the event will be determined by the Garden Director based on utility needs as well as best mix and flow for the event visitor.

Using space outside of the assigned tent is at the discretion of the Director.

Please remember that spaces are outside, under tents and that the event runs rain or shine.

What are the expectations for the artists?

Artists are asked to be actively working in their medium as well as to engage with the visiting public and are expected to participate both days .

Artists are to display and sell only original art pieces with the exception of art cards and photographs.

What is the cost to participate?

We ask each participant to donate an original work of art towards the silent auction fundraiser held during the event. All paintings must be framed.

Donated pieces must be submitted a month in advance and will be used in marketing the event.

When can I set up and tear down?

Prior to the event, Milner Gardens will send all participants a letter indicating an assigned arrival time between 8:00 and 9:30am on the 16th. To ensure a smooth set up for all participants, it is important to arrive at this time. On arrival, staff and volunteers will assist the artist in moving supplies and equipment to the assigned space.

No tear down is to occur before 4:00pm on the 22nd.

Storing artwork?

Milner Gardens is not responsible for the artist’s works. The artists are welcome to remove their art work at the end of each day. Storage space will also be made available inside the secure and alarmed buildings.

What do I need to bring?

Artists will need to bring any other items needed to display their works. Light refreshments are available for artists and volunteers but you are advised to bring your own lunch or purchase from our food services.

Can I sell artwork?

Sales are restricted to original works of art only.

No commission is asked for. The sale of art cards only is permitted.
