Delores Louie
Auntie Delores was born in Duncan, she married into the Chemainus First Nation over 46 years ago, and lives on Reserve in Chemainus with her husband to this day. She has three children, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Auntie is a very busy lady, but when she has time she enjoys knitting and spending time with her husband and family. Auntie Delores was one of the first, First Nations people to go to university in the '70s and attended UVIC with the goal of saving the Salish language. Her mother encouraged her and her sister to do anything they could to record and save thier language, so the worked with many other people on a dictionary and a writing system for the Salish language. Auntie remembers this a very exciting and interesting time, although the commute was the hardest part! Auntie Delores works mainly with the First Nations Studies program and can be found in the Gathering Place, Building 170 on Wednesdays.
