Probation Policy for University and Career/Technical Programs
Students registered in any number of credits who earn less than a 2.0 G.P.A. (“C”) average over the Fall and Spring semesters will be placed on probation when they register next. To have probationary status removed, students must obtain a G.P.A. of 2.0 (“C”) or better at the end of the probationary year. If students’ G.P.A. is below 2.0 (“C”) at the end of a probationary year, they will be prohibited from re-registering in any University or Career/Technical program in the next year.
What does this policy mean to the student?
- Students are placed on Academic Probation upon receiving less than a 2.0 (“C”) Grade Point Average (GPA) during the Fall and Spring semesters combined.
- Students are placed on Academic Probation for the Fall and Spring semesters of the next academic year in which they register if their GPA was below a 2.0 ("C") the previous academic year (fall and spring combined).
- In order to move off Academic Probation (have the probationary status lifted) and avoid being suspended from the institution, a student must achieve a Grade Point Average of 2.0 (“C”) or better on courses taken during the Fall and Spring semesters of the year they are on academic probation. The number of courses taken does not affect this policy. Summer session or Intersession grades are not used for any Academic Probationary purposes.
- Students follow normal registration procedures for the year that they are on Academic Probation. No penalty is incurred.
- Students who do not achieve a GPA of 2.0 (“C”) or better during their probationary year, will be suspended from re-registering in any University or Career/Technical program in the next year.
-
Students who have been suspended will be required to meet with an Educational Counsellor (Advisor) in Student Support Services. Students can only re-enter University Studies only after spending an entire year away from the institution.
-
Please make an appointment by calling 250-740-6410. Please state that you are hoping to return from Academic Suspension when you make the appointment.
-
If students wish to apply for a different career/technical program than the one they have been suspended from, they should follow the normal admission procedures for the program that interests them. Most of these programs are competitive entry. Some are wait list programs that admit students on a first come, first qualified, first served basis. If accepted, you will be be able to start a program in September of the year following your disqualification. Check the Program Availability list for application deadlines and start dates.
