Tips for a Successful Telephone Advising Appointment

Know your VIU Student number (if you have one)! We use this to verify your identity, look up records, and make notes in your file.

Advisors can’t assist you with your academic planning if you are in the car or otherwise distracted. Treat phone appointments as you would any other important in-person appointment.

Be prepared to take your call:

• at the time scheduled
• in a quiet, undisturbed area
• with access to a computer and the Internet.
• If you cannot keep your appointment, please call to cancel and reschedule your appointment.
• Have a list of questions prepared for your appointment.
• Keep an advising folder of your notes, questions, plan of study and other materials.
• Remember, you can always make a follow up appointment to discuss the issues further.

Take responsibility for your decisions and your education! Take notes in your appointment and be sure to follow up on action items.
