Message from the President
Welcome Alumni. As a former student you know that at Malaspina, we’re proud of our reputation for excellence. As one of our Alumni, you know that our reputation for excellence is based on you and your personal and professional accomplishments. Your Malaspina family is proud of you.
Having recently announced my upcoming retirement, I have been reflecting back on my years of service to Malaspina and to our community. I am proud of the challenges we have faced and the successes that we have accomplished. From our humble beginnings in the old Nanaimo hospital on Kennedy Street to our current focus on attaining University designation, Malaspina has experienced significant growth and expansion in response to the changing needs of our students and communities both locally and globally.
If you haven’t been on campus for a while I would invite you to stop by and take a look around. You’ll see many signs of change including our new Library, Centre for Shellfish Research, School of Management Building, Playing Fields on Third Street and our ever expanding degree programs and MBA program. At the same time, you’ll recognize that we have maintained our fundamental commitment to promoting student success through the provision of diverse academic, career, vocational, technical and upgrading programs.
As I am out in the community, my greatest source of pride is you, our Alumni. I am always interested in hearing about your successes and accomplishments and of seeing the contributions that you are making toward creating a healthy and prosperous community.
Welcome back, stay in touch and get involved. As a valued member of the Malaspina family, we’re committed to supporting your life-long success and encourage you to become involved in our many Alumni initiatives.
Sincerely,
Rich Johnston, President
Vancouver Island University
