Gas Fitter Level 1 Apprenticeship Training

A domestic/commercial gas fitter installs, tests, maintains and repairs propance and/or natural gas lines, applicances, equipment and accessories in residential and commercial premises. Gas fitter apprentices must have mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and the ability to read and understand complex instructions and to do careful and exacting work. They must be good with numbers and have sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift heavy materials and stand for long periods of time.
To complette a full apprenticeship and to become certified requires additional time spent training on the job and in the classroom. A gafitter apprentice must complete a two-year program including 3600 workplace hours and 360 in-school hours of training. After completion of all requirements and achievement of a passing grade on the Gas Appliance servicing exam administered by the BC Safety Authority, a BC Certificate of Apprenticeship will be awarded. With Regards to HVAC/R
Due to the Industry Training Authority mandated reduction in HVAC program length and the ITA/BC Safety Authority decisions regarding Gas fitter licensing, gas licensing is no longer included in the HVAC Foundation program. Instead, the additional Domestic/Commercial Gas Fitter Level 1 apprenticeship session will now be offered on an ongoing basis at the Cowichan Campus of Vancouver Island University.
Application Process
Students currently enrolled in VIU's HVAC program will have priority registration into this program, but must have an ID# with the ITA. Any seats remaining will be offered to the public. Students must be registered with ITA as an apprentice.
Program cost (subject to change without notification)
Tuition cost: $534.42 tuition + $14.88 society fee + $21.38 activity fees for a total of $570.68. Exam fee:There is an exam fee of $294.00 which includes a 3 year membership with the BC Safety Authority. This fee is payable to the BC Safety Authority by chq and is the responsibility of the student to arrange in the area in which they live.
Texts will cost approximately $250 and will be available for sale at the Vancouver Island University bookstore in Duncan, BC.
