First Day of Class Info and Booklist - Heavy Duty
First day of class
NOTE: MARCH 9, 2009 Heavy Duty Level 3 will meet in building 178 all other information will be the same for this class.
- Bring steel toed boots and CLEAR safety glasses for shop.
- Classroom: Room 202, Building 150, Automotive Shop for all classes except Air Brakes which are held in Classroom 101, in Building 178
- Shop: Building 110, Heavy Duty Shop
- Heavy Duty Mechanics instructor office, Room 111 or 114, Building 110, Heavy Duty Shop
Hours of work:
- Monday to Thursday 8 am to 3:30 pm
- Coffee-time 10 am to 10:15 am
- Lunch 12:15 to 1 pm
- End of the day 3:30 pm
- Friday, homework, shop reports and study day
First Aid – All emergencies must be reported to 6600 – DO NOT CALL 911.
- Dial 6600 from an internal phone, or dial 250-740-6600 from an outside phone.
- Be prepared to tell the operator your:
- Name
- Campus location – building name and/or number and room number
- Nature of emergency (e.g. first aid, ambulance, police)
- Extent of the emergency and the number of persons involved
- The PFAA (Primary First Aid Attendant) will respond to the emergency.
- Facilities Service employees will direct the Emergency Response Vehicle(s) to the appropriate location.

Food services
- Coffee and goodies are available at coffee time from a coffee truck that stops in front of the heavy duty shop
- Lunch is available on campus at the Student Activity Building (185), the Cafeteria (300) or at Subway (in building 165)
Student cautions
- Vancouver Island University has no smoking regulations in all buildings.
- Pay Parking, and speed regulations on campus are enforced.
- Instructors must OK any work to be done on student vehicles.
- All tools, props, equipment and vehicles must be treated with respect, they must be used many times by many apprentices.
- Instructors are here to help you learn, but you are also responsible for how much and how well you learn.
STUDY SKILLS
It is recommended that you take notes in class and review them after class. Any questions that you have should be brought to the attention of the instructor either in class or in the shop. When studying you must consider all areas of each topic. The following is as list of things to consider when you are reviewing or studying for exams:
- Terminology, you must learn the names of all components
- Basics of operation
- Troubleshooting and test procedures
- Repair procedures
Remember it is in your best interest to learn as much as possible when you are at a technical training session. Extra help with study techniques may be available for apprentices who feel that they are not able to get the most out of each technical session, ask your instructor.
Marking
Theory
Each Technical Training session is Year is divided into two parts for marking.The average of marks achieved on both midterm and final exams give the overall theory mark. Your theory mark counts for 80% of your final mark
Practical
The practical mark is determined by the number of shop projects completed and speed and quality of work achieved. Other factors in the practical mark are attitude, initiative and attendance. The practical mark counts for the other 20% of your final mark
