LPI (Language Proficiency Index)
If you do not meet the English 12 prerequisite for your program or course at Vancouver Island University, you may write the LPI. Scores of Level IV or better on the essay plus a minimum average of 50 percent (50%) on the additional sections, meets VIU's English 12 prerequisite.
LPI consists of four parts: identifying errors in sentence structure; identifying errors in English usage; answering questions on written passages, and summarizing short prose passages; and writing an expository essay. Further information is found in Preparing to Write the Language Proficiency Index available at Vancouver Island University libraries and bookstores or from the LPI office at the University of British Columbia.
The Learning Centre at the Nanaimo Campus, Bldg 205 Room 106 will help you prepare for the LPI. Please call 250-740 6425 for hours of operation.

Registration fee for LPI is $109.00 + hst. You must pre-register a minimum of 6 calendar days prior to test date. Register on-line or print off registration form to complete and mail in. Remember to attach your passport sized photo to your Test Admission Ticket to bring to your LPI exam.
