Facilities

  • Celestron CGE Pro 1400 Edge HD with (hopefully soon) an SBIG CCD camera.
  • Twin Celestron C8 8" telescopes - for research on bright stars, and for student instruction.
  • Tracking Camera mounts - used for instruction in astronomy, allow students to take long exposure photographs of the sky
  • Lab site-license for Starry Night Enthusiast software (B315 - 113).
  • HST Guide star catalogue. Einstein X-ray catalogue. - CD ROM data bases available to be used to generate finder fields for observations, and for general research.
  • DAOPHOT - a suite of programs from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory that is used to extract stellar magnitudes from data frames that have been processed using IRAF.
  • IRAF - Image Reduction and Analysis Package. This package of programs is from the National Optical Astronomical Observatories, and is used to analyse CCD data obtained with VIU's telescopes, and elsewhere.
