Overview
Automotive Mechanic Training
We offer three Automotive programs at VIU:
- All four levels of the Automotive Apprenticeship program
- A 40-week Automotive Service Technician Foundation program
- A 40-week Automotive Career Technical Centre (CTC) Program
The Apprenticeship program is a four-year block release program for apprentices who are working at an automotive repair facilty. They will come to VIU for 6 to 7 weeks in each of the four years they serve as an apprentice.
The Automotive Service Technician Foundation program prepares students with the skills and knowledge they will need to find a position as an Automotive Apprentice or as a trainee Partsperson or Service Advisor.
The Career Technical Centre program is similar in content to the Foundation program, but is offered to selected mid island Grade 11 and 12 students and taught by VIU instructors at our Automotive shop.
All of these programs are taught by highly experienced Automotive Technicians who value hands-on, in-the-shop training methods whenever possible. We use customer owned vehicles for much of our training and we strive to keep the learning experience directly related to procedures and skills you will need to have in the automotive workplace. Classroom lectures are presented through dynamic PowerPoint presentations and also through CDX movie clips and graphics.
