Program Outline
The CTC program is an automotive entry level program for grade 11 and 12 high school students from the mid-island area. VIU automotive instructors teach at the VIU auto shop and also at Nanaimo District Secondary School auto shop. The program is intended to fast-track younger students into the automotive repair trade with a VIU entry level Certificate, while ensuring they graduate from high school with a Dogwood Certificate.
Full time program - 4 days per week
The 10 month program covers the following topics:
- shop safety
- tool and equipment use
- vehicle maintenance servicing
- vehicle braking systems
- suspension steering systems
- automotive electrical systems
- engine mechanical systems
- EFI, engine electronic controls
- drive-train systems
- welding
- job finding skills
Graduates of this program may receive credit for the first year technical training of the apprenticeship program. They will then find employment as an automotive apprentice and continue their apprenticehip for the remaining 3 to 4 years.
Costs
Tuition - No tuition fees.
You will be required to provide the following:
Text books: approx cost $300
- "Automotive Technology" by Halderman classroom manual
- Automotive Classroom notes - available at VIU bookstore
CSA approved safety shoes, $60 - $100
CSA approved safety glasses, $6 - $15
Fender cover, Seat Cover

Outcomes
A Vancouver Island University Certificate will be awarded to each graduate. You will also graduate from highschool.
Graduates will have gained knowledge and practical experience that may enable them to receive an apprenticeship with an automotive business.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible for credit of the technical portion for the 1st year of the apprenticeship program. Upon completion with Distinction, graduates may be eligible for direct entry into 2nd year apprenticeship technical program.
Career Options
Job opportunities as an Apprentice Technician in Nanaimo are sometimes limited, but opportunities exist in other B.C. locations.
Graduates from this program have also found employment as Parts Persons and as Service Advisors in automotive businesses.
After completion of the apprenticeship program and upon receiving the inter-provincial Certificate, you could find work anywhere in Canada.
Shortages of skilled workers such as automotive technicians are predicted for the near future.
