General Information

Registration

How to Register

Upon notification of acceptance to VIU, new students will receive information regarding the registration procedure. Along with an outline of the procedure, students will be notified about fees and provided with other information about the University. In most cases, course registration can be completed online, or in-person.

Students may appoint a “proxy” to register for them. A proxy must know the student’s Student Number and Registration Password in order to act on behalf of the student. The student is responsible for any and all actions taken on their behalf by the proxy.

Note 1: In academic programs, due to space or enrolment limitations, “permission to register” does not guarantee that students will be able to register for all courses they wish to take.

Note 2: Vancouver Island University reserves the right to cancel any scheduled program or courses if there is insufficient enrolment. In such cases, every reasonable effort will be made to notify students involved as early as possible.

Student’s Responsibility

Students are responsible for the accuracy of their registration in courses. Included in this responsibility is the official recording of all changes in course registrations, as well as changes to address or phone numbers.

For all matters, the University considers it to be sufficient notification to mail information to the student’s address as recorded with the Registration Centre.

Registration Priorities – Academic Studies

The priority registration system maintains the concept of open access and, at the same time, rewards academically successful students and those who apply early.

Registration appointments will be assigned in the following order:

  • Incoming Outstanding Students.*
  • Continuing University Program or Adult Basic Education students, ranked in descending order of university-level credits completed.
  • New students with a minimum “B” average (see GPA definition).
  • Other new students ranked by week of application (random within week).
  • Students returning after an academic suspension.
  • Unclassified students and late applicants in date order.

* The Incoming Outstanding Student initiative (IOS) is a special proposal from the Deans of Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Business Administration programs to provide full access to first year classes for the strongest applicants who are entering post-secondary studies for the first time. Details on current criteria are available from the Registration Centre.

GPA Definition

GPAs are calculated on the following:

  • For students who have completed less than one year (24 credits) of university-level studies: English 11; Social Studies 11 or First Nations Studies 12; and Mathematics 11 (Applications, Principles, Foundations, or Pre-calculus), or a Second Language 11. (Note: a beginner Language 11 does not satisfy the Second Language requirement, and Introductory Mathematics 11 does not satisfy the Math requirement.)

Board of Governors Special Admission Category

(1)    The President, on behalf of the Board, may allocate up to 2% of the available first and second year spaces to students applying under this section. This category exists for applicants who already may have difficulty accessing post-secondary education because of a variety of barriers—barriers that a rigorous merit system might intensify. Contact the Registration Centre for details.

(2)    The Board recognizes the importance of accommodating those students who qualify for entrance scholarships. Where possible, seats in courses and programs will be reserved for winners of entrance scholarships.
