Trades & Applied Technology Programs

Hairdressing

The Program

This program uses the Pivot Point training system, a service mark and trademark owned by Pivot Point International Inc., which offers an educational program consisting of exclusive techniques of scientific hair designing. The program creates a positive environment with a comprehensive curriculum of superior quality, incorporating the use of interactive laser disc and DVD technology. This revolutionary technology, combined with superior education, results in the ultimate hands-on experience.

The program covers all aspects of the trade in both theoretical and practical application of skills. Learning is accomplished through practical instruction and student participation with equipment, tools and materials normally used in the trade. Students quickly advance to performing services on clients in VIU’s salon. Students frequently compete in local, provincial and national competitions, consistently winning top places. Some students have joined the Canadian team in world competitions.

Class hours of the program are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Mondays to Fridays. Homework will take approximately 4 to 6 hours per week. Good attendance is mandatory.

Students are required to complete the following projects:

  • Hair Colouring
  • Permanent Waving

Program topics include:

  • Hair cutting (men and women)
  • Hair styling: wet, thermal and long hair
