First Nations Fisheries Technologist
FIFN 110T (3) Fisheries English I (Ends Nov 2011)
A focus on the development of library skills as they apply to finding fisheries-relevant information in books and on electronic media (online catalogues and the internet). Also focuses on developing good writing skills with an emphasis on technical reports, proposals, daily work journals, and work plans. (13:0:7 for 3.5 weeks)
Prerequisite: English 11.
FIFN 111T (6) Computing Science (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to fundamental operation of computers as tools in fisheries-related work. Theoretical topics include structure and functionality of computers and recent developments and implications re computer applications. Practical topics include current and common operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets and database management. Some hands-on computer experience including Microsoft Windows skills recommended. (0:12:12 for 7 weeks)

FIFN 115T (3) Fisheries English II (Ends Nov 2011)
Focuses on the importance of further developing writing and communication skills including oral and visual presentations, different writing formats, and funding or work proposals. Library and computer skills are applied in an effort to develop the use of computers as effective information assimilation, composition and presentation tools. (20:0:0 for 3.5 weeks)
Prerequisite: English 11.
FIFN 121T (6) Enhancement and Restoration of Fish and Aquatic Habitat (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to the concepts, issues and techniques of fish stock enhancement and fish habitat restoration. Includes practical field work related to the operation and construction of enhancement and restorations projects. (15:0:9 for 7 weeks)

FIFN 153T (6) Introductory Hydrology for Fisheries (Ends Nov 2011)
A comprehensive introduction to the fundamental concepts, processes and issues involved in the movement of water through the water cycle and specifically over land via water courses utilized by fish. Includes field trips and work related to the operation of hydrological processes in fish habitats and restoration projects. (16:0:8 for 7 weeks)
Prerequisite: Principles of Mathematics 11 or Applications of Mathematics 11.
FIFN 181T (3) Fisheries Statistics (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to the principles of statistics and their application to fisheries related work. Topics covered give students an ability to compile, summarize, and analyze common formats of fisheries data for patterns, trends and statistical significance. Applies computer skills learned in previous courses. (17:0:3 for 3.5 weeks)

FIFN 211T (6) Salmonid Life Histories (Ends Nov 2011)
A review of salmonids' natural history in BC; the implications of life-history patterns; and the opportunity these patterns provide for fisheries managers, including a review of government stocking and enhancement strategies, as well as fisheries regulation. (12:0:12 for 7 weeks)

FIFN 212T (6) Salmonid Fisheries Management (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to the concepts and issues of salmonid fisheries management. Topics include a wide range of fish sampling and capture methods and population surveys. Includes practical field trips and field work to demonstrate the application of relevant techniques and procedures. (12:0:12 for 7 weeks)

FIFN 225T (3) Traditional Values and Philosophies: Special Topics (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to the traditional values and philosophies of First Nations people with an emphasis on the specific region within which a given FNFTD program is being delivered. Includes traditional approaches to resource utilization with an emphasis on the fisheries resources common to the area. (20:0:0 for 3.5 weeks)

FIFN 232T (6) Fish Habitat Assessment and Management (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to the concepts and issues of fish habitat assessment and management with an emphasis on salmonids. Examines the fundamentals of habitat requirements, measuring habitat quality, the impacts of resource extraction. Includes practical field trips and work related to habitat assessment and management, and 'real-world' application of relevant techniques and procedures. (20:0:4 for 7 weeks)
Prerequisite: Biology 11, Principles of Mathematics 11 or Applications of Mathematics 11, and FIFN 111T.
FIFN 261T (6) Fisheries Politics: Special Topics (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to the history, concepts and issues of fisheries related politics from both a fisheries management agency and First Nation people perspective. (16:0:4 for 7 weeks)
Prerequisite: FIFN 110T and FIFN 115T.
FIFN 295T (6) Project Management in Fisheries (Ends Nov 2011)
An introduction to the concepts and procedures involved in managing fisheries projects. Includes general project planning and implementation, project management skills, and financial analysis involved in writing and preparing proposals for fisheries projects as well as the ongoing management of such projects. (24:0:0 for 7 weeks)
Prerequisite: FIFN 110T, FIFN 111T, and FIFN 115T.
