Heavy Duty / Commercial Transport Mechanic

HDCT 101T Work Experience

An opportunity to work in the "real world" to gain important skills as well as an understanding of the nature of the heavy mechanical fields. The time spent on a worksite also provides an opportunity for making new contacts in the chosen field.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 111T Shop Skills

Provides a grade that tracks shop skill level and progression.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 121T Workplace Initiative

Provides a grade that tracks workplace initiative and attitudes.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 140T Shop Procedures

Through study and practice, prepares students for working in a shop environment. Topics include developing safe work habits; tool identification and use; safe operation of equipment and vehicles; identification of fasteners, fittings and hoses; and an introduction to computer use in the mechanical trades.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 142T Braking Systems

A study of the principles, repair and service of basic hydraulic and air brake systems. Covers brake systems used on both highway, and off-highway vehicles and equipment. Includes an examination of air accessories found in vehicles and equipment.

HDCT 144T Hydraulic Systems

A study of principles, repair and service of basic hydraulic systems found in trucks and heavy equipment.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 146T Welding

Provides a welding safety module as well as basic arc and gas welding instruction and practice.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 160T Truck Frames, Suspensions and Attachments

A study of the operation, repair and service of suspension systems used on light and heavy vehicles. Also covers various attachments such as fifth wheels.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 164T Track and Wheel Machines

A study of the principles, repair and service of steering and suspension on wheel equipment such as front-end loaders and skidders, as well as steering and undercarriage on track type equipment. Includes an examination of types of attachments used with track type machines.

HDCT 166T Power Transfer Systems

A study of the principles, repair and service of power transfer units such as clutches, transmissions and differentials used in highway vehicles and heavy equipment.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 168T Electrical and Electronic Systems

A study of the principles, repair and service of basic electrical and electronic systems. These systems include batteries, starting, charging and electronic engine control.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

HDCT 180T Engine Systems

A study of the principles, repair and service of basic gasoline and diesel engine systems.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.
