HSLC 100 (3) Introduction To Technology For Organizing And Presenting Information
An introduction to personal computers, Windows file management, Internet, and Microsoft Office applications. Topics include: the personal computer system, keyboarding, Windows, file management, producing correspondence and reports with Word, graphic presentations with PowerPoint, preparation of numerical and financial data with Excel, sourcing information via the Internet; and evaluating and using on-line resources. HSLC 100 was formerly called CHCA 100T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 105 (3) Business Writing And Presentation Skills
An introduction to business writing and presentation skills. Topics include basics of business communications, effective business writing, writing effective reports, defining the essential, effective presentation skills, defining your purpose and audience, selecting appropriate writing styles and formats, conducting research, and accessing ongoing support and writing opportunities.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
HSLC 110 (3) Introduction To The Health Care System
An introduction to the evolution of Canada's health care system, Federal & Provincial health care, health human resources, and the future challenges and issues in health care delivery. HSLC 110 was formerly called CHCA 100T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 115 (3) Interpersonal Communications
An introduction to essential interpersonal skills for work and personal life. Topics include personal effectiveness, interpersonal relationships, communication skills, self assessment and strategies for improvement, fundamentals of communicating verbally, non verbal feedback interpersonal relationships, cultural and situational differences.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
HSLC 120 (3) Organizational Management
A study of management and the functions and principles of management as directly related to continuing health care. Topics include managerial styles, communication techniques, motivation theory, and efficient and effective management. HSLC 120 was formerly called CHCA 110T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 125 (3) Health Human Resource Management
An introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of human resource management in the health care setting. Topics include: impact of current trends on health human resource management, legal/regulatory context, challenges faced in managing a diverse workforce in a complex environment, recruitment, selection, retention strategies, safe and healthy workplaces, and labour relation resources. HSLC 125 was formerly called CHCA 120T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 130 (3) Financial Accounting For Health Care Professionals
An introduction to accounting information and financial statements sufficient to enable an administrator/manager in the health-care field to ensure cash management and internal control of financial and other resources. HSLC 130 was formerly called CHCA 130T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 135 (3) Legal And Ethical Aspects Of Health Care
An examination of the general principles that govern the organization of our health care system. Topics include complexity of the system, major professional groups in the field, the legal and ethical consideration of administration of health care in British Columbia, and major issues under continuing debate within the health care system. HSLC 135 was formerly called CHCA 140T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 140 (3) Nutrition And Food Services
An examination of basic adult nutrition, the relationship between life-style and chronic disease, popular nutritional issues, nutritional assessment and diets, food service systems and food production techniques, and food quality controls. HSLC 140 was formerly called CHCA 145T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 200 (3) Conflict Resolution
An introduction to the foundations, perceptions, and key principles of conflict, communication techniques, the dispute resolution continuum and common approaches, and skills for resolving conflict in a positive and effective manner.

HSLC 205 (3) Gerontology
An introduction to the study of gerontology. Topics include the changing demographics of Canada and the effects on the health care system, biological and social complexities of aging, aging as a natural process, services provided to seniors, informal supports for seniors, family and friends and the challenges facing seniors in Canada today. HSLC 205 was formerly called CHCA 211T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 210 (3) Leadership In Continuing Care
An examination of essential leadership skills for the 21st Century. Topics include leadership theory, leadership traits, behaviours and styles, effective leadership, leadership and management, and leadership and power.

HSLC 215 (3) Managing Support Services
An examination of support services in continuing health care settings, including housekeeping and laundry services, maintenance services, acquisition, and material management. Topics include clean, safe and secure living environments and the evaluation, selection, use and control of equipment and supplies. HSLC 215 was formerly called CHCA 221T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 220 (3) Resident/Client Care
An examination of the concepts of care, the delivery of community care services, facility design, admission procedures, multi-disciplinary care, diagnostic and rehabilitative services, respite care, leisure and recreational activities, and the development of client care manuals. HSLC 220 was formerly called CHCA 231T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 225 (3) Resident Safety And Risk Management In Continuing Care
An examination of resident safety and risk management in the field of continuing care. Topics include understanding the importance of planning, developing effective safety and risk management plans, implementing safety and risk management plans, and evaluating safety and risk management plans.

HSLC 230 (3) Quality Improvement In Continuing Care
An examination of essential and fundamental information for developing the foundation for quality improvement in continuing care. Topics include background of quality improvement, importance of a framework, establishing and maintaining a framework, and the manager's role in ensuring the short and long term application of quality improvement practices. HSLC 230 was formerly called CHCA 241T; credit will not be granted for both courses.

HSLC 235 (3) Managerial Accounting For Health Care Professionals
A continuation of HSLC 130 including flexible budgeting and standards of control, cost centres, master budget, financial statement analysis, break-even analysis, and responsibility accounting. HSLC 235 was formerly called CHCA 245T; credit will not be granted for both courses.
Prerequisite: Admission to program and successful completion of HSLC 130.
HSLC 240 (3) Budget Management And Planning For Health Care Professionals
An introduction to budget management and planning. Topics include capital budgeting, long-term financing, managing short-term resources and obligation, accountability and control, the balance sheet, the activity statement, the cash flow statement, unique aspects of accounting for not-for-profit & health care organizations, and financial analysis.

HSLC 245 (3) Factors Influencing The Provision Of Care For The Elderly
An examination of the considerations of care from the client and families perspective. Topics include understanding the importance cultural consideration, gathering information pertinent to the client and family, health promotion supports and services, providing support to family caregivers, economic factors, providing supports during times of transition.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
HSLC 250 (3) Final Project In Context Of Learner's Workplace
A final applications project to demonstrate the understanding of theories and application of course concepts.
