Recreation and Sport Management

Students not enrolled in the Recreation and Sport Management program must have the Chair's permission to register in any recreation course.

LEIS 100  (3)  Leisure in Society

This course will consist of a philosophical and historical examination of questions central to understanding leisure and recreation in Western civilization. Topics include ideas about work, play, and quality of life. Also to be examined are implications for the recreation profession in Canada and anticipated developments in Canadian Society. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: None.

RMGT 100  (3)  Intro to Recreation and Sport

A philosophical and historical examination of recreation and sport in Western civilization. Topics include ideas about work, play, and quality of life; implications for the recreation and sport profession in Canada; and anticipated future developments in Canadian society. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 101, TOUR 100 or RMGT 100. (3:0:0)

RMGT 101  (3)  Intro to Marketing in Recreation and Sport

An introduction to all aspects of recreation and sport marketing including situation analysis, objectives, market segmentation, target marketing, budgets, marketing methods, monitoring, and evaluation. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 106, TOUR 101 or RMGT 101. (3:0:0)

RMGT 109  (9)  Co-operative Education Work Placement I

Individual students are carefully matched to employers who supervise them and evaluate their performance during paid work experience. Monitoring is conducted by VIU personnel. Students maintain a diary of their experiences on the job and write a report on their accomplishments. (0:0:0)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" grade point average.

RMGT 110  (1)  Co-operative Education Preparation

This seminar based course will prepare students for their first Co-operative Education Work placement by examining job search strategies, resume creation, and effective interview techniques. Students will also learn how to conduct informational interviews, career and employement research and skill self-assessment, and roles and responsibilities in a work placement. RMGT 110 was formerly called RECR 101T; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 110 or RMGT 110. (0:1:0)

RMGT 153  (3)  Cultural Issues in Recreation and Sport

An exploration of the relationship between recreation and sport and culture. An examination of recreation and sport from a socio-anthropological perspective, studying sociocultural variables such as ethnic and racial identity, changing gender roles, generational trends and social class shifts. Through exploration, discussion and application of the course contents, learners are able to develop and deliver culturally based leisure services. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 103, TOUR 153 or RMGT 153. (3:0:0)

RMGT 159  (3)  Environmental Stewardship in Recreation and Sport

An analysis of the significance of natural resources to recreation and sport behaviour, to provide the skills needed to manage environmentally sustainable tourism and recreation/sport operations. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Recreation and Sport Management diploma program or permission of Department Chair.

RMGT 161  (3)  Leadership in Recreation and Sport

A study of the theory base and functionality of leadership, including understanding the nature of leadership and competencies for practice in recreation and sport settings. Includes review of the material presented in the assigned readings, and an opportunity to process the information gained and practice the skills presented. (3:0:0)

RMGT 170  (3)  Delivery Systems in Recreation and Sport

An introduction to leisure services delivery systems operating in Canada. Topics include Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments' roles; the commercial, not-for-profit, and voluntary sectors; recreation and sport for persons with special needs; travel and tourism; outdoor recreation and sport; the aging population; multiculturalism and aboriginal peoples. RMGT 190  (3)  Programming and Special Events in Recreation and Sport

An examination of the principles involved in designing, implementing and evaluating recreation and sport programs, from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Emphasis on the rationale for services provided as well as how to use a systematic program planning process for designing programs. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 102, TOUR 190 or RMGT 190. (3:0:0)

RMGT 200  (3)  Human Resource Management in Recreation and Sport

An opportunity to acquire the planning and administrative tools needed to perform personnel related functions including recruiting, hiring, orientation, training, performance appraisal and guidance. Topics include labour force issues, legislation and regulations pertinent to the recreation workplace. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Recreation and Sport Management diploma program or permission of Department Chair.

RMGT 209  (9)  Co-operative Education Work Placement II

The second and final practical, on-the-job training placement as described in RMGT 109. (0:0:0)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" grade point average.

RMGT 210  (1)  Co-operative Education Preparation

This seminar based course is designed to prepare students for their second cooperative education work placement, improve job preparation, and retention skills, explore labour markets and career development. Students will develop a personal action plan, portfolio, business card and complete a reflective paper on competencies. RMGT 210 was formerly called RECR 201T; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of TOUR 210 or RMGT 210. (0:1:0)

RMGT 211  (3)  Inclusive Recreation and Sport Services

An introduction to inclusive recreation and sport opportunities for special groups within society. An opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide inclusive leisure opportunities for all special populations within the recreation and sport delivery system. (3:0:0)

RMGT 220  (3)  Facility Management in Recreation and Sport

An examination of the key components of leisure service management including the planning, design and construction of public and private facilities and parks. Includes an examination of the impact of innovation on design and operation of facilities and the role of technological development. (3:0:0)

RMGT 226  (3)  Law for Recreation and Sport Managers

An introduction to the Canadian legal system and laws relating to human rights, tort, contracts, consumer protection, employment, insurance, agency, forms of business ownership, real and personal property and environmental protection. Legal issues pertaining to the recreation and sport environment such as public regulation, athlete's rights, sport as business, sport injuries, drug testing, the role of the teacher and coach, and risk management. Law is examined in the context of improving recreation and sport management decision-making and services. Not open to students with credit in TRMT 226 or LAWW 326. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 105, TOUR 226 or RMGT 226. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Min. "C" in each of ENGL 115 and RMGT 170.

RMGT 251  (3)  Market Research in Recreation and Sport

An introduction to the range of techniques used in recreation and sport research, with special attention to survey research, to provide the background needed to design and conduct surveys, as well as to evaluate research reports. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Recreation and Sport Management diploma program or permission of Department Chair.

RMGT 252  (3)  Outdoor Recreation and Sport

An opportunity to explore the outdoor environment as an educational and recreational resource; to survey local outdoor recreational facilities; to plan, implement and evaluate existing outdoor programs; to consider outdoor/environmental ethics and safety considerations and to study the relationship between outdoor pursuits and the leisure services. Prerequisite: Admission to Recreation and Sport Management diploma program or permission of Department Chair.

RMGT 260  (3)  Commercial Recreation and Sport

A study of the nature and function of recreation and sport in commercial and private settings, including an overview of the development and profitable operation of areas, facilities, and programs in the leisure market. An opportunity to learn the necessary writing, technical, business management, and people skills to compete in the current marketplace. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Recreation and Sport Management diploma program or permission of Department Chair.

RMGT 270  (3)  Recreation and Sport in Aboriginal Communities

An examination of beliefs, participation and organization surrounding aboriginal recreation and sport. Topics include aboriginal community life, patterns of recreation and sport participation, beliefs concerning recreation and sport leadership, traditional games, aboriginal sport and recreation organizations, major aboriginal sport events, parks, and current issues in aboriginal sport and recreation delivery. Prerequisite: Admission to Recreation and Sport Management diploma program or permission of the instructor.

RMGT 280  (3)  Leisure and Active Lifestyles

An examination of the role of leisure and active living in today's society. Topics include the connection between the mind, body and spirit in leisure activities, and the contribution of active living to increased feelings of personal worth, energy and vitality. Credit will only be granted for one of RECR 180 or RMGT 280. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Recreation and Sport Management diploma program or permission of Department Chair.

RMGT 309A  (9)  Third Co-operative Education Work Placement

The third and final practical on-the-job training experience as described in RMGT 109. Admission is based on availability of space and the student's academic performance. (9:0:0 for 26 weeks)

Prerequisite: Min. "B" grade point average.

RMGT 311  (3)  Consumer Behaviour in Recreation

A consideration of the concepts of consumer behaviour, and the practical implications of these concepts to leisure. Topics include designing products through an understanding of consumer needs, and designing marketing strategies that influence the consumer to purchase these products and to receive satisfaction from the purchase decision. (4:0:0 for 10 weeks)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in third-year of the Recreation Major program.

RMGT 324  (3)  Organizational Behaviour

An opportunity to apply advanced skills and professional attitudes in organizing the recreation workforce, including innovative people management techniques, human relations skills, motivational techniques, negotiation skills and conflict management techniques. Topics include organizational leadership, leadership approaches, motivation, understanding of organizational culture, and management of working relationships. (4:0:0 for 10 weeks)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in third-year of the Recreation Major program.

RMGT 359  (3)  Management of Parks and Protected Areas

An examination of the management of parks and protected areas for tourism and recreation values, as well as for conservation values. (4:0:0 for 10 weeks)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in third-year of the Recreation Major program.

RMGT 480  (3)  Issues, Trends and Professional Practice in Recreation

The ability to apply knowledge of current issues and trends to the development of professional practice. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in fourth-year of the Recreation Major program.

RECR 152  (3)  OUTDOOR RECREATION (SUMMER)

A 6 day introduction to surf kayaking, surf boarding, and sea kayaking skill development and leadership practice. This applied field skills course will focus on leadership theory, safety considerations, and practical training. The course will involve a day of lecture and flat water practice followed by a 6 day base camp. (7:0:42 for 1 weeks)

INTD 494  (3)  Integrated Seminar in Natural and Cultural Resource Management

An in-depth interdisciplinary study of natural and cultural resource use and allocation issues. Topics include social, economic, ecological and political implications of resource use conflicts and resolution approaches; political and institutional processes of resource and environmental management; the role of citizens groups, land/resource owners, First Nations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Students from different disciplines will learn from one another in order to become educated, articulate and responsible stakeholders of British Columbia resources upon graduation. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Fourth-year standing in Recreation and Tourism program, or min. 84 credits for other programs.
