SSER 210  (3)  Managing in the Contract Sector (Ends Dec 2011)

An opportunity to develop management and administrative skills required for work in the contract and private sector for the delivery of human services. Topics include proposal development, budgeting and budget management, staffing and team development, the contracting process, business planning, and basics of managing in the private sector. Credit will only be granted for one of HSER 210 or SSER 210. (0:3:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Social Services Diploma program or permission of instructor.

SSER 211  (3)  Family Studies (Ends Dec 2011)

An opportunity to broaden understanding of the Canadian family in its many changing forms. Topics include the historical, economic and social factors which shape family life, as well as theories relevant to family practice. Focus is on social issues facing Canadian families today, and intervention strategies utilized by Human Service Workers. Students are encouraged to personalize their learning by relating course concepts to their own families and to their work with families. Credit will only be granted for one of HSER 111 or SSER 211. SSER 230  (3)  Conflict Resolution (Ends Dec 2011)

An intensive investigation of communication skills essential for effective mediating, negotiating, and resolving of interpersonal conflict. Skills are demonstrated and practiced in exercises involving conflict situations that are relevant to work in the human service field. Credit will only be granted for one of HSER 230 or SSER 230. SSER 240  (3)  Program Development, Planning and Implementation (Ends Dec 2011)

An examination of principles and skills relevant to the development, planning and implementation of programs in the human service field. Topics include the planning process, identification of needs and resources, development of program models, program development tools and processes, participative approaches to program development, program management tools and program evaluation strategies. Credit will only be granted for one of HSER 240 or SSER 240. (0:3:0)

SSER 250  (3)  Community Development (Ends Dec 2011)

A study of the theories and skills of community organization and community development. Topics include understanding a community; models of community organization and development; community leadership; interdisciplinary teamwork in the community context; practical tools, skills and strategies for community development. Credit will only be granted for one of HSER 250 or SSER 250. (0:3:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Social Services Diploma program or permission of instructor.

SSER 270  (3)  Social Work Practice in Mental Health and Addictions (Ends Dec 2011)

An introduction to the practice of social work with populations with concurrent disorders. Topics include: examination of current theories, delivery of social work services, policy and practice issues, as well as critical review of contemporary perspectives on the ecology of mental health challenges and addictions. Prerequisite: Second-year standing.

SSER 281  (3)  Practicum I (Ends Dec 2011)

A three week field practicum with a Human Service agency/organization. Focuses on integration and application of theory, skills and practice in a supervised setting. An interview may be required by the agency. Normally done concurrently with SSER 282 Practicum II. Not open to students with credit in HSER 281. Credit will only be granted for one of HSER 281 or SSER 281. (0:0:7)

SSER 282  (3)  Practicum II (Ends Dec 2011)

A second three week field practicum, normally done concurrently with SSER 281 Practicum I. Focuses on integrating and applying theory and skills and building competency, under supervision. Students are expected to demonstrate their ability to understand systemic structures and functions of a service agency in relation to clients, community and other agency workers. Note: Not open to students with credit in HSER 282. Credit will only be granted for one of HSER 282 or SSER 282. (0:0:0 —105)
