TOUR 100  (3)  Introduction to Tourism

An introduction to the role that leisure "plays" in contemporary society and how leisure affects the quality of life for the individual and the group. An historical and philosophical overview to understand the context of tourism. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 101, RMGT 101 or TOUR 100. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Tourism diploma program or permission of instructor.

TOUR 101  (3)  Introduction to Tourism Marketing

An introduction to all aspects of tourism marketing including situation analysis, objectives, market segmentation, target marketing, budgets, marketing methods, monitoring, and evaluation. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding B.C.'s major market areas. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 106, RMGT 101 or TOUR 101. (3:0:0)

TOUR 109  (9)  First Co-Operative Education Work Placement

Individual students are carefully matched to employers who supervise them and evaluate their performance during paid work experience. Monitoring is conducted by VIU personnel. Students maintain a diary of their experiences on the job and write a report on their accomplishments. (0:0:0 —35)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" grade point average.

TOUR 110  (1)  Co-operative Education Preparation

This seminar based course will prepare students for their first Co-operative Education Work placement by examining job search strategies, resume creation, and effective interview techniques. Students will also learn how to conduct informational interviews, career and employement research and skill self-assessment, and roles and responsibilities in a work placement. TOUR 110 was formerly called RECR 101T; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of RMGT 110 or TOUR 110. (0:1:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Tourism Studies Diploma program or permission of Department Chair.

TOUR 153  (3)  Cultural Issues in Tourism

An examination of cultural diversity in relation to tourism to develop an awareness and respect of one's own and other cultures in order to provide culturally sensitive leisure services. Characteristics, expectations, and barriers of diverse cultural groups are examined and skills such as inclusive planning, communications, and negotiations are developed. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 103, RMGT 153 or TOUR 153. (3:0:0)

TOUR 159  (3)  Environmental Stewardship In Tourism

An examination of the relationship between natural resources and the development of tourism opportunities. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Admission to Tourism diploma program or permission of instructor.

TOUR 161  (3)  Leadership In Tourism

A study of the theory base and functionality of leadership including understanding the nature of leadership and competencies for practice in tourism. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: None.

TOUR 170  (3)  Delivery Systems In Tourism

An introduction to leisure services and the organization of tourism in Canada, including the meaning and place of leisure in Canadian society, the structure of tourism services, and the nature of developing aspects of the tourism professions. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: None.

TOUR 190  (3)  Programming and Special Events in Tourism (Ends Dec 2011)

An examination of the principles involved in designing, implementing, and evaluating special events and leisure programs. Emphasis is on the rationale for the provision of services and the utilization of systematic program planning processes to meet identified needs. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 102, RMGT 190 or TOUR 190. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: None.

TOUR 190  (3)  Programming and Special Events in Tourism (Effective Jan 2012)

TOUR 200  (3)  Human Resource Management in Tourism

Topics include job analysis, writing job descriptions, conducting interviews and reference checks, staff orientation and training, and performance appraisals. (2:1:0)

TOUR 207  (3)  Heritage Interpretation in Tourism

A study of the planning and delivery of heritage interpretation messages for a variety of tourism venues such as parks, historic sites, and urban attractions. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in second-year of Tourism diploma program or permission of instructor.

TOUR 208  (3)  Tourism Destinations

A critical examination of tourist destination areas at the local, regional, national, and international level. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in second-year of Tourism diploma program or permission of instructor.

TOUR 209  (9)  SECOND CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION WORK PLACEMENT

The second practical, on-the-job training experience as described in TOUR 109. (0:0:0 —35)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" grade point average.

TOUR 210  (1)  Co-operative Education Preparation

This seminar based course is designed to prepare students for their second cooperative education work placement, improve job preparation, and retention skills, explore labour markets and career development. Students will develop a personal action plan, portfolio, business card and complete a reflective paper on competencies. TOUR 210 was formerly called RECR 201T; credit will not be granted for both courses. Credit will only be granted for one of RMGT 210 or TOUR 210. (0:1:0)

TOUR 215  (3)  Tour Group Packaging

An introduction to tour packaging for inbound and outbound tour groups. Emphasis is on the tour packaging process including research and design, negotiation and booking, costing and pricing of tours and development marketing techniques to sell tours. Techniques necessary for handling clients and suppliers and evaluating tours are developed. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in second-year of Tourism diploma program or permission of instructor.

TOUR 220  (3)  Facility Management in Tourism

An examination of the role of the management in the effective and efficient operation of areas and facilities. Topics include design and maintenance, and appropriate policies and procedures for operations and supervision of the recreation sites. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: None.

TOUR 226  (3)  Law for Tourism Managers

An introduction to the Canadian legal system and laws relating to human rights, tort, contracts, consumer protection, employment, insurance, agency, forms of business ownership, real and personal property, and environmental protection. Legal issues pertaining to tourism and travel industries in the context of improving tourism management, decision making, and service quality. Credit will only be granted for one of CONV 105, RMGT 226 or TOUR 226. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: TRMT 170 and min "C" in ENGL 115. Not open to students with credit in RMGT 226 or LAWW 326.

TOUR 251  (3)  Market Research Methods in Tourism

An examination of the conception of, and practice in, applying a fundamental series of steps in planning and conducting research. Specific discussion and examples are directed towards tourism areas. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: None.

TOUR 252  (3)  Adventure Tourism

An examination of adventure tourism programming. Topics include day-camping, resident camping, wilderness trips, a variety of outdoor skills, program development and implementation, the responsibilities of the organizer, and legal liability. Includes a field trip. (3:0:3)

Prerequisite: Enrolment in second-year of Tourism diploma program.
