BIOL 047 Biology 11 - Advanced

Equivalent to Biology 11. Includes a survey of all the kingdoms of life, evolution and ecology. This course is a prerequisite for many university and vocational programs. It may used toward an Advanced Certificate.

Prerequisite: ENGL 037 or equivalent assessment.

BIOL 067 Biology 12 - Provincial

Equivalent to Biology 12, Biology 067 covers human biology, basic genetics and cell biology. This course is useful for other university and vocational programs, especially the health sciences. It may be used towards a Provincial Certificate.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in ENGL 047, or equivalent assessment; min. "C+" in SCIE 030, or equivalent; or permission of the instructor.

CHEM 047 Chemistry 11 - Advanced

Advanced level Chemistry, equivalent to Chemistry 11, which is a prerequisite for many vocational and university programs. Topics include dimensional analysis with the metric system, measurement, the definition of matter, nomenclature system of chemicals, balancing chemical equations, aqueous chemical solutions, the mole and Avogadro's number, and stoichiometry and molarity.

Prerequisite: One of Principles of Mathematics 11, MATH 041, MATH 045, or assessment.

CHEM 067 Chemistry 12 - Provincial

Provincial level chemistry, equivalent to Chemistry 12. Topics include stoichiometry and energy and their relationship to the gas laws, reaction rates, systems in equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation/reduction, and an introduction to the organic chemistry of hydrocarbons.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in one of MATH 041, MATH 045, Principles of Mathematics 11, or equivalent, or assessment; and min. "C+" in one of CHEM 047, Chemistry 11, or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

COST 011 Computer Basics I

This course introduces and develops computer skills. Includes computer basics and introduction to applications for the workplace and personal use.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

COST 015 Computer Basics II

This course is a continuation of COST 011, developing computer skills for the workplace, job search, and personal use. Includes discussion of social networks and computer safety issues.

Prerequisite: COST 011 or permission of instructor or permission of Department Chair.

COST 020 Computer Studies - Fundamental (Effective Sep 2011)

Introduction to computers, designed primarily for students with little or no computer experience. Emphasizes keyboarding and word processing.

Prerequisite: ENGL 016 or permission of instructor.

COST 030 Computer Studies – Intermediate Level

This is an introductory course designed to give students basic computer skills that they can use in both the college and work environment.

Prerequisite: ENGL 020 or equivalent assessment.

COST 047 Computer Studies 11 - Advanced

An exploration of computers and applications, designed for students with basic computer skills. Topics may include introduction to computer hardware, Windows, word processing, the internet, spreadsheet and database applications, and electronic mail.

Prerequisite: ENGL 037 or permission of instructor.

COST 067 Computer Studies 12-Provincial

Practical study of computer applications and skills, and how to apply them to effectively solve problems in academic, work and personal lives. Instruction modules may include information technology, publishing/presentation, advanced spreadsheets, database management, networking, programming.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in COST 047 or permission of instructor.

ENGL 001 Reading for Life and Work I

Essential skills in workplace literacy required for employment. Topics may include reading, writing, and following instructions and directions; understanding labels on food, clothing, products, and medicines; interpreting signs and notices; reading and understanding guidelines and regulations; and recognizing and understanding safety signs/symbols.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

ENGL 002 Reading for Life and Work II

A continuation of ENGL 001, developing essential skills for workplace literacy for employment in the service industry.

Prerequisite: ENGL 001 or permission of instructor or permission of Department Chair.

ENGL 011 English - Fundamental Level 1

This is an introduction to basic reading, writing, spelling and grammar.

Prerequisite: Meeting with a literacy placement advisor.

ENGL 012 English - Fundamental Level 2

This course builds on basic language skills studied in ENGL 011. Students gain confidence in reading short passages and writing simple correct sentences, as well as in setting personal goals.

Prerequisite: ENGL 011 or assessment.

ENGL 013 English - Fundamental Level 3

This course is designed to help adults read better. Emphasis is also placed on writing, spelling and introductory computer skills needed to succeed in other Adult Basic Education courses or in meeting learning goals.

Prerequisite: ENGL 012 or assessment.

ENGL 014 English - Fundamental Level 4

Learners acquire increased fluency in both reading and oral communication, as well as development of writing strategies.

Prerequisite: ENGL 013 or assessment.

ENGL 015 English - Fundamental Level 5

This course builds on everyday reading and writing skills developed in ENGL 014. It is useful for developing strategies for dealing with personal, work and educational situations.

Prerequisite: ENGL 014 or assessment

ENGL 016 English - Fundamental Level 6

This course focuses on mastery of fundamental skills in reading comprehension, narrative writing and acquisition of study skills needed for success in ENGL 037 and other intermediate level courses.

Prerequisite: ENGL 015 or assessment.

ENGL 037 English - Intermediate

Equivalent to English 10, focusing on reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary activities. Useful as preparation for the GED exam.

Prerequisite: ENGL 016 or assessment or permission of instructor.

ENGL 047 English-Advanced

Equivalent to English 11, focusing on essay writing, research and some study of literature. Useful as preparation for the LPI exam.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in ENGL 037 or assessment or permission of instructor. Strongly recommended that students have familiarity with basic word processing skills.

ENGL 067 English-Provincial

Equivalent to English 12, focusing on the study of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, essay writing and research. A prerequisite for many technical and university courses.

Prerequisite: Min. C+ in ENGL 047 or assessment or permission of instructor. Strongly recommended that students have familiarity with basic word processing skills.

ENGL 069 English – Provincial Technical Level

This course develops knowledge, skills, processes, strategies, attitudes, and behaviours relevant to the world of academic, technical, and professional reading, writing, speaking, and listening. May not meet English 12 requirements for post-secondary admissions.

Prerequisite: ENGL 047 or equivalent assessment.

HIST 067 History 12-Provincial (ABE)

A survey of twentieth Century world history. It may be taken as part of the Provincial Adult Basic Education program.

MATH 001 Math for Life and Work I

Essential math skill development necessary for employment and independent living. Topics include basic math functions/operations and employability skills in money handling, time management, measurement, and organizational skills for the workplace.

Prerequisite: Admission to program.

MATH 002 Math for Life and Work II

A continuation of MATH 001. Development of essential math skills necessary for competitive employment in the service industry.

Prerequisite: MATH 001 or permission of instructor or permission of Department Chair.

MATH 010 Math-Basic

Introduction to the use of numbers. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are stressed.

Prerequisite: Basic reading skills.

MATH 011 Adult Literacy Fundamental Math Level 1

Math 011 provides students with the skills necessary to enter Math 012.

Prerequisite: Basic reading skills.

MATH 012 Adult Literacy Fundamental Math Level 2

Math 012 provides students with the skills necessary to enter Math 013.

Prerequisite: Math 011 and basic reading skills, or assessment.

MATH 013 Adult Literacy Fundamental Math Level 3

Math 013 provides students with the skills necessary to enter Math 014.

Prerequisite: Math 012 and basic reading skills, or assessment.

MATH 014 Adult Literacy Fundamental Math Level 4

Math 014 provides students with the skills necessary to enter Math 015.

Prerequisite: Math 013 and basic reading skills or assessment.

MATH 015 Adult Literacy Fundamental Math Level 5

Math 015 provides students with the skills necessary to enter Math 016.

Prerequisite: Math 014 and basic reading skills or assessment.

MATH 016 Adult Literacy Fundamental Math Level 6

Math 016 builds on math skills learned in previous ALFM courses. Topics include ratio and proportion, percent, calculating discounts and tax and graphing. Math 016 provides students with the skills necessary to enter Math 030.

Prerequisite: Math 015 or assessment.

MATH 020 Math-Fundamental

Part of the Fundamental ABE program, providing Grade 8 equivalency. Topics include fractions, decimals, percents, introductory geometry, measurement and graphing.

Prerequisite: MATH 010 and ENGL 010 or assessment.

MATH 030 Math-Intermediate

Grade 10 level math course, and includes survey of math skills and introduction to metrics, area/volume, ratios, geometry and algebra.

Prerequisite: MATH 020 or assessment. Assessment if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 8 reading level.

MATH 040 Consumer and Career Math-Advanced

Topics covered include personal banking, consumer credit, buying a car or home, income tax, insurance and investments. Not accepted as a prerequisite for MATH 047 or MATH 067.

Prerequisite: MATH 030 or assessment. Assessment if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

MATH 041 Introductory Algebra-Advanced

Basic algebra skills suitable for students with little or no previous knowledge of the subject. Provides good preparation for MATH 047.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in MATH 030 or assessment. Assessment if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

MATH 044 Mathematics for Industry-Advanced

Designed for adults in trades and other occupations who need strong math skills, or those intending to enter an apprenticeship program. Topics include algebra, geometry, trigonometry and a brief review of basic arithmetic. Not accepted as a prerequisite for MATH 047 or MATH 067.

Prerequisite: MATH 030 or assessment. Assessment if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

MATH 045 Principles of Math 11: Part I

This advanced level course includes an introduction to algebra, solving equations, and roots. MATH 045 and 046 combined gives credit equivalent to Principles of Math 11.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in MATH 030 or assessment.

MATH 046 Principles of Math 11: Part II

This advanced level course includes advanced algebra, fractional equations, trigonometry, and graphing. MATH 045 and 046 give credit equivalent to Principles of Math 11.

Prerequisite: "C+" in Math 045 or assessment or permission.

MATH 047 Principles of Math 11 - Advanced

Equivalent to high school Principles of Math 11 and a prerequisite for many Career/Technical and University programs. Topics include: basic algebra review; linear equations and inequalities; graphing, relations, and functions; polynomials and polynomial functions; rational expressions and equations; radical expressions and equations; quadratic equations; and trigonometry. Note: MATH 047 is equivalent to MATH 045/046. Students cannot receive credit for both MATH 046 and MATH 047. Credit will only be granted for one of MATH 046 or MATH 047.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in MATH 041 or assessment or permission of instructor. Assessment if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

MATH 048 Mathematics for Trades

This advanced level trade math course includes using various systems of measurement and converting within and between them; calculating perimeter, area, and volume, using ratio and proportions; using and converting percents, fractions, and decimals; problem solving; and business costs. Not accepted as a prerequisite for Math 047 and Math 067.

Prerequisite: Math 030 or assessment. Recommended: Grade 10 reading level.

MATH 065 Principles of Math 12: Part I

The first half of the provincial level pre-calculus course. Includes topics such as graphing, relations, linear and quadratic functions, and systems of equations.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in one of MATH 046, MATH 047, Principles of Math 11; or assessment, or permission of instructor. Assessment may be required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 11 reading level.

MATH 066 Principles of Math 12: Part II

The second half of the provincial level pre-calculus course. Includes topics such as polynomials, trigonometry and trigonometrics, and logarithmic functions Credit will only be granted for one of MATH 067 or MATH 066.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in MATH 065 or assessment or permission. Assessment may be required if prerequisite is more than 5 years old.

MATH 067 Principles of Math 12

This provincial level pre-calculus course includes graphing, sequences, series, polynomial, trigonometric, and logarithmic functions.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in one of MATH 046, MATH 047, Principles of Math 11, or assessment, or permission of instructor. Assessment if prerequisite is more than 5 years old. Recommended: Grade 11 reading level.

PHYS 047 Principles of Physics 11 - Advanced

Introductory physics, equivalent to Principles of Physics 11, which is a prerequisite for many technology, vocational, and university programs. Topics include: language and concepts of physics to describe physical processes and phenomena; measurement; kinematics; dynamics; electricity; heat; lab skills and safety; and preparation of lab reports.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in one of MATH 041, MATH 045, Principles of Mathematics 11, or equivalent, or assessment, or permission of instructor.

PHYS 067 Principles of Physics 12 - Provincial

Provincial Level physics, equivalent to Principles of Physics 12, for students intending to take science courses in university or technical programs. Topics include: kinematics in two dimensions; dynamics in two dimensions; electrostatics; electromagnetism; and waves.

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in one of MATH 046, MATH 047, Principles of Mathematics 11, or equivalent, or assessment, and min. "C+" in one of PHYS 047, Physics 11, or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

SCIE 040 Science and Technology

An introduction to the basic principles of chemistry, biology, and physics. The course strengthens students' science skills to prepare them for entry into specific ABE science advanced or provincial level sciences.
