ACCE 011 Job Readiness I
Understanding and development of positive work habits and job readiness skills to meet employer and industry expectations. Topics include safety, work habits, attendance, grooming, following directions, work attitudes, self assessment, goal setting, and WHMIS certification.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
ACCE 015 Tutorial Support I
Individualized instruction, development of study skills, and tutorial support to meet individual learning needs.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
ACCE 019 Tutorial I
Individualized instruction and tutorial support to develop self awareness and build an individual vocational plan.
Prerequisite: Assessment and permission to register.
ACCE 021 Life Skills I
Understand and practice positive social skills necessary for workplace and personal success. Topics include respect, self-awareness, global and community responsibility, healthy boundaries, and healthy relationships. Also includes WorldHost Level I certification.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
ACCE 022 Health and Wellness I
An exploration of basic human health and how the human body functions. Topics include ways to prevent disease through healthy diet and exercise; understanding health through physical, mental and emotional domains; and examination of implications of disability.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
ACCE 023 Problem-Solving Seminar I
Students participate in a twice weekly seminar to learn and practice effective problem-solving skills. Topics and discussion are based on issues and experiences arising from the work setting.
Prerequisite: Admission to the Employment and Life Skills Training program.
ACCE 025 Skills for Life and Work I
Development of life skills required for successful employment and independence. Topics include social skills, self esteem, self awareness, and their relation to career choices.
Prerequisite: Assessment and permission to register.
ACCE 031 Vocational Training I
Supported hands-on training in specific entry-level job skills within the service industry. Units include safety, retail, supermarket, and food preparation/restaurant skills. Includes assessment of skills, interests, abilities, and appropriate working conditions. Emphasis is on strong work habits in conjunction with essential skill development.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
ACCE 037 Worksite Training I
Hands-on practical training in work habis, and practice in supervised group work experiences in a variety of settings. Completion of a vocational assessment of skills, interests and abilities.
Prerequisite: Assessment and permission to register.
ACCE 038 Worksite Training II
A continuation of ACCE 037, building increased independence and exposure to a variety of work settings.
Prerequisite: Assessment and permission to register.
ACCE 039 Worksite Training III
Supervised and supported individual work placements, providing opportunity to apply and practice skills for employment with increasing independence.
Prerequisite: Assessment and permission to register.
ACCE 051 Job Readiness II
A continuation of ACCE 011. Topics include integration of work experience; career goal setting; skills and barriers; employment standards; union memberships; labour market; and workplace etiquette. Emphasis on team skills.
Prerequisite: ACCE 011 or permission of instructor or permission of Department Chair.
ACCE 052 Communication
Development of communication skills required in the workplace, including verbal and non-verbal communication, listening, written communication, sending and receiving clear messages, and giving and receiving feedback. Students learn and practice successful interview skills.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
ACCE 053 Service Industry Skills
Development of specific skills for work in a variety of settings in the service industry. Certificates offered include Food Safe, Serving It Right, and World Host Level II.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
ACCE 054 Job Search Skills
Development of effective job search skills and strategies including resumes, references, networking, job leads, telephone and in-person contacts, interviews, letters, and applications.
Prerequisite: Admission to program or permission of instructor or permission of Department Chair.

ACCE 061 Life Skills II
A continuation of ACCE 021. Development of skills for transition into successful independent living including types of accommodation, budgeting, use of community resources, Canada's Food Guide, and basic food preparation within a limited budget.
Prerequisite: ACCE 021 or permission of instructor or permssion of Department Chair.
ACCE 062 Health and Wellness II
A continuation of ACCE 022. An in-depth look at practical and positive lifestyle choices to improve and maintain physical, mental, and emotional health. Students will implement and practice a set of personal strategies for improved health specific to their needs.
Prerequisite: ACCE 022 or permission of instructor or permission of Department Chair.
ACCE 063 Problem-Solving Seminar II
Students participate in a twice weekly seminar continuing to learn and practice effective problem-solving skills introduced in the Level I course. Topics and discussion are based on issues and experiences arising from work placements.
Prerequisite: ACCE 023.
ACCE 065 Skills for Life and Work II
A continuation of ACCE 025. Topics include problem solving, decision making, anger management, and conflict resolution within a variety of relationships.
Prerequisite: Assessment and permission to register.
ACCE 071 Vocational Training II
Continutation of ACCE 031. Independent work experience based on vocational profile developed in ACCE 031. Employer led training based on industry standards for competitive employment.
Prerequisite: ACCE 031 or permission of the instructor or permission of Department Chair.
ACCE 074 Supported Job Search
An opportunity to develop job search techniques, supported with a supervised work experience.
Prerequisite: Admission to program or permission of instructor or permission of Department Chair.
ACCP 001 Program Orientation
An orientation to the VIU campus, services, and the Employment and Life Skills Training Program, including an overview of expectations and preparation for study. Organization of materials and supplies needed for coursework. Required for all new students.

COST 011 Computer Basics I
This course introduces and develops computer skills. Includes computer basics and introduction to applications for the workplace and personal use.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
COST 015 Computer Basics II
This course is a continuation of COST 011, developing computer skills for the workplace, job search, and personal use. Includes discussion of social networks and computer safety issues.

COST 020 Computer Studies-Fundamental (Ends Aug 2011)
Introduction to computers, designed primarily for students with little or no computer experience. Emphasizes keyboarding and word processing.

COST 030 Computer Studies – Intermediate Level
This is an introductory course designed to give students basic computer skills that they can use in both the college and work environment.
Prerequisite: ENGL 020 or equivalent assessment.
COST 047 Computer Studies 11 - Advanced
An exploration of computers and applications, designed for students with basic computer skills. Topics may include introduction to computer hardware, Windows, word processing, the internet, spreadsheet and database applications, and electronic mail.
Prerequisite: ENGL 037 or permission of instructor.
COST 067 Computer Studies 12-Provincial
Practical study of computer applications and skills, and how to apply them to effectively solve problems in academic, work and personal lives. Instruction modules may include information technology, publishing/presentation, advanced spreadsheets, database management, networking, programming.
Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in COST 047 or permission of instructor.
ENGL 001 Reading for Life and Work I
Essential skills in workplace literacy required for employment. Topics may include reading, writing, and following instructions and directions; understanding labels on food, clothing, products, and medicines; interpreting signs and notices; reading and understanding guidelines and regulations; and recognizing and understanding safety signs/symbols.

ENGL 002 Reading for Life and Work II
A continuation of ENGL 001, developing essential skills for workplace literacy for employment in the service industry.

MATH 001 Math for Life and Work I
Essential math skill development necessary for employment and independent living. Topics include basic math functions/operations and employability skills in money handling, time management, measurement, and organizational skills for the workplace.
Prerequisite: Admission to program.
MATH 002 Math for Life and Work II
A continuation of MATH 001. Development of essential math skills necessary for competitive employment in the service industry.
