The ASL Basic Level, the second of three levels of ASL, builds on skills
acquired at the Prep Level and strengthens skills in conversation, asking
clarifying questions, phrasing, use of classifiers, and building knowledge
of linguistic functions and grammatical features. Students who complete this
level will gain basic skills needed for work with non-verbal children using
some signs. ASL Basic Level may be used for Grade 12 course credit as a Grade
12 language course.
Career Opportunities:
Students who successfully complete all levels of ASL may pursue careers as interpreters and instructors. ASL is a complement to other professional credentials such as Community Support Workers, Educational Assistants, Child and Youth Care Workers, Early Childhood Educators, and others who work with individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired.
Course Delivery:
The program is offered on a part-time basis, typically evenings and/or Saturdays.
Start Date:
TBA
Program Requirements:
No admissions process; however, students must show proof of successful completion of ASL Prep Level and completion of the Mastery Exam. Please note: Students who have previous training and/or experience in ASL may be assessed to determine appropriate course placement.
