2012 Training Schedule
Are you interested in an exciting career in the shellfish aquaculture industry? Then the Shellfish Aquaculture Technician Training (SATT) Program may be for you. This six week program kicks off with a one-week foundation course that will refresh the participant’s knowledge in communication skills, working with others (partners/ teams / leadership), computer skills, numeracy, and document use. The remainder of the program will focus on building awareness and skills in the shellfish industry.
This program is being funded by the Ministry of Jobs, Innovation and Tourism’s Essential Skills Access (ESA) Program. Tuition and materials are available for participants that meet the criteria of the ESA program. Funding for this training program will be administered by Vancouver Island University (VIU).
Shellfish Aquaculture Training Program Schedule
VIU will be running three intakes for this program, the schedules are as follows:
First Intake - January 23, 2012 - February 21, 2012.
Second Intake - March 12, 2012 - April 18, 2012.
Third Intake - May 7, 2012 - June 13, 2012.

Who is this course for?
This course is for those interested in developing skills and knowledge for a successful career in the shellfish aquaculture industry.
What will the participants gain from this course?
The participants will gain knowledge and valuable skills to help them enter the aquaculture industry. For example, students will learn how to site a shellfish farm, the species currently cultured in BC and emerging new species, market research, water sampling, bivalve biology, farming techniques, production planning, farm safety, as well as the skills and regulatory requirements for harvesting and processing of shellfish. This program offers a combination of practical field work, computer and lab activities, in addition to classroom learning and interaction
Eligibility
This program has been selected to assist unemployed, or low skilled individuals gain employment and will cover all tuition and books for students that meet the eligibility criteria of the ESA program, namely the person:
- Cannot not be on EI or attached to EI in the past three years
- Is low skilled and employed, however, they:
- Have not completed high school or
- Have completed high school, but do not have any post secondary education

The following courses will be delivered as part of the program, with the exception of AQUA 225, which will be delivered only once in the first intake and will be replaced AQUA 550T & AQUA 555T for the second and third intakes.

Individuals that would like to attend a course that is currently not scheduled in our calendar, please email csr@viu.ca for more information on when courses will be available. The Centre for Shellfish Research can also offer communities and organizations courses and certificates on a contract basis.
