Background

Discussions around the importance of a Marine Field Station for the BC shellfish industry began in 1976. In 2003, some thirty years later, planning for the Marine Field Station in Deep Bay began. With the first funding secured in 2004 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and BC Knowledge Development Fund the real planning could now begin. This generous support allowed us to purchase 7 hectares of land in Deep Bay, perform necessary initial steps in construction (surveying, road construction, land clearing…), develop architectural designs of the property and facility as well as lease 10.8 hectares of adjacent marine foreshore for a shellfish research and demonstration farm.

To date, significant funds have been secured, however we still require more to be able to complete the project. The Farm Site construction has already begun and is anticipated to be complete by fall 2010.
