Facility Tour & Lunch Package

Group Tours of the new Deep Bay Marine Field Station are now available, Monday to Friday, for groups of 15 to 40. Package includes a 1 hour tour of the facility and a 30 minute presentation over lunch that touches on some of the issues we will try to address with our research. Lunch for the group can be chosen from our catering menu and can be served before or after the tour. Tour cost is $5.00/person plus lunch cost, (taxes and gratuity not included) Inquiries or Bookings

Project History

  • March 2008- Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET) approves $1,000,000 contribution. Read the Fishfarmer Magazine article
  • December 2007- McFarland completes: preliminary site master plan, schematic design concept and floor plans
  • June 2007- Larry McFarland Architects Ltd. (LMA) selected as project architects to lead the design and construction process that will showcase the Marine Field Station as the “greenest building possible” for that location.
  • December 2006- Malaspina University-College (now Vancouver Island University) approves expanded vision for the Marine Field Station to include tourism and marketing, education and industry training and public outreach and engagement.
  • June-September 2006- The building lot is partially cleared and upper and lower building sites are prepared. Seawater delivery system is installed. Archaeological excavations are conducted. Site specific consulting reports are prepared on riparian areas and environmental impacts, geotechnical conditions and archaeology.
  • January 2006- 2.8 hectares of waterfront property are donated to Malaspina University-College (now Vancouver Island University) for the Marine Field Station.
  • June 2004- Canadian Foundation for Innovation and BC Knowledge Development Fund award a total of $1.8 million
  • January 2003-A review, feasibility study and business plan for a Shellfish Aquaculture Research and Training Facility (Kingzett et. Al. 2003) was completed.
