The following list gives you an idea about some of the impairments that are included under each of the categories. Click on category to learn more.

Neurological

These conditions have to do with the nerves or nervous system.

The following neurological conditions qualify for accommodation:

  • ADD
  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Epilepsy
  • Learning Disability
  • Fetal Alcohol Effects
  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
  • Graphic Praxis
  • Head Injury
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Mutiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Stroke
  • Tourette's Syndrome

A Neurologist, Neuropsychologist, Psychiatrist or a Physician can provide a diagnosis of a Neurological Disability. For a learning disability diagnoses, an assessment must be completed by a registered psychologist.

Cognitive Disabilities

Pertain to impairment in the process of being aware, knowing, thinking, learning and judging. A person with a cognitive disability will have significant sub average general intellectual functioning.

  • Mild Intellectual Disability
  • Moderate to Severe Intellectual Disability

Students with cognitive disabilities may qualify for Malaspina's Access Program.

This program offers adults with a disability opportunities to learn new skills in the areas of:

  • employment preparation; and/or
  • personal management skills necessary for workplace and independent living; and/or
  • job-specific vocational skills.

Hearing Disabilities

Disabilities defined by partial or complete hearing loss. Levels of hearing impairment vary from a mild but important loss of sensitivity to a total loss of hearing. A substantial number of hearing impairments are caused by environmental factors such as noise, drugs, and toxins.

Many sensorineural hearing losses result from a genetic predisposition. A student may have:

  • Conductive Hearing Loss
  • Sensorineural
  • Mixed Hearing Loss
  • Tinnitus

A Cetified Audiologist can provide a diagnosis of a hearing impairment.

Mental Health

The following mental health disorders qualify for accommodation:

  • Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Panic Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Specific Phobias
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
  • Eating Disorders
  • Substance Abuse

A Clinical Psychologist, Psychiatrist or a Physician can provide diagnosis of a Psychiatric Disability.

Multiple Disabilities

Multiple simultaneous conditious which may or may not be related. For example, a student may have permanent arthritis and also be legally blind.

Visual Disabilities

Visual disabilities are defined as impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a person’s educational performance.

The following visual conditions qualify for accommodation:

  • Blind
  • Legally Blind
  • Partially Sighted
  • Low Vision
  • Cortically Visually Impaired

An Opthamologist, Optometrist or an Orthoptist may provide
a diagnosis of a visual impairment.

Chronic Health

These health impairments describe a condition that results in limited strength, vitality or alertness.

The following chronic health impairments qualify for accommodation:

  • CF- cystic fibrosis
  • HIV
  • Cancer
  • Hepatitis
  • Kidney Disease
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chemical Insensitivities

A Physician can provide a diagnosis of a chronic health impairment.

Physical Disabilities

The following permanent physical conditions are eligible for accommodation:

  • Arthritis
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Spina Bifida
  • Amputations
  • Paraplegia
  • Quadriplegia
  • Obesity

A Physician can provide a diagnosis for a physical disability.
