Information for Instructors
Disability Services coordinates accommodation and provides educational support services for students with a documented disability. We are facilitators for students with disabilities as they seek and secure the accommodation needed for equal access to academics and to fully participate in all aspects of VIU ’s student life. We promote and encourage self-advocacy and believe that students with disabilities
- Are always the expert about themselves
- Have a right to take risks
- Are their own best advocate
- Control their own lives
The student is responsible for initiating and following through with accommodations and services that they need.
Eligibility
To be eligible for services, students with a disability must:
- Be enrolled at Vancouver Island University
- Provide current documentation of a disability
- Be registered with Disability Services
We value your cooperation in providing support and seek to work together in compliance with the Human Rights Code.
Accommodation
In accordance with the Human Rights Code, a student with a documented disability may be entitled to reasonable accommodation upon request. Reasonable, means that no one suffers unduly, Not the student! Not the Instructor! Not the School!
An assessment, conducted by a certified expert in the specific field, will determine what accommodation is required.
An
academic accommodation is an arrangement that is put in place to support a student with a disability. Accommodations are provided to “level the playing field”. They are available because the disability may put the student at a disadvantage compared to other students who don’t have a disability.
