Bus PassesChristine, VIU student

In the Student Union Building 193, you can purchase daily or monthly Bus passes or even books of tickets to ride the Nanaimo Regional District Bus system. If you are a person with a disability, you can purchase a yearly BC Bus Pass by calling 1 866 866 0800 Choose option 4, then option 3.

Parking

Handicap Parking Sign

If you require handicap parking, a S.P.A.R.K. parking permit must be purchased from Nanaimo Regional Disability Resource Center, #2 - 4166 Departure Bay Road, Nanaimo. You may purchase a permit for $20. There is a form that must be completed by your doctor: http://www.nrdrc.org/parking.html . On campus, the valid handicap permit must be displayed on the windshield rear-view mirror. You should park in designated handicap spots, however if one is not available, you can park FREE in general, staff, or metered lots provided your permit is displayed on your mirror.

Campus Maps

Campus Maps detailing builidings, ramp routes, handicap parking, and emergency phones are available to download here or pick one up at the Disability Services Office, Building 200, 2nd Floor.

Student ID

The new Student / Library Cards are issued at the Library, Building 305, 3rd floor. Cards are only issued to currently enrolled V.I.U. students.

Student Health Plan

The Vancouver Island University Student Union now offers a comprehensive extended health and dental plan to students. This service is mandatory for all full-time students except those with existing health and dental coverage. Those who are already covered can opt out through the student union website or in person at the Student Union Office in Building 193.

Lockers

Students with a disability that experience problems carrying textbooks and other education related items might want to consider the use of a locker.

Lockers are located in Building 180, 190, 255, 345, and 355

Rental = $10 per semester plus $10 deposit (includes a key for the locker or combination lock). Coin lockers are also available in the upper Cafeteria. Apply for your locker rental at the Bookstore in Building 305 - Lower floor.

Emergency Procedures

As another semester gets under way, please take a moment to think about emergency preparedness as it applies to your time on campus. Begin by familiarizing yourself with the information found on the Health and Safety web page: http://www.viu.ca/healthandsafety/emergency.asp.

In the event of an emergency that requires evacuation from a building, evacuation plans are posted on each floor of every building. Be sure to read the plan and if you have questions, feel free to contact our office or Health and Safety at safety@viu.ca .
