AlumniED Newsletter - Spring/Summer 2010 Convocation Issue
Dean's Message from Dr. Harry Janzen
Greetings and welcome to the Spring/Summer 2010 Convocation issue of our Alumni ED Newsletter.
Convocation offers an opportunity to reflect on our successes over another academic year and to congratulate our deserved graduates. This semester I am especially pleased to congratulate the first cohort of 25 students graduating from our Masters in Educational Leadership program. These working professionals will now share their expertise with students and school districts here on Vancouver Island and beyond.
Also deserving special congratulations is Master's student, Barbara McLaughlin, who was recently awarded the prestigious Governor General Gold Medal award for academic excellence in an graduate program.
Our program offerings continue to grow. We are please to announce the addition of a second Master's program which joins our current Masters in Educational Leadership which has now enrolled its' second cohort of teaching professionals. Our new program is a Masters in Special Education and will begin in September of this year

As well, a new cohort of students has recently enrolled in our Part-Time Post Baccalaureate program which is a new offering in the Courtney-Comox area. Students are working professionals with a prior degree who wish to obtain an Education degree. The program is modeled on the successful Saanich program which recently completed.
VIU's Faculty of Education continues to fill the need for qualified, certified and enthusiastic educators, both here and abroad. Congratulations to all our graduates-- past and present.

Barb McLeod Retires
We are pleased to celebrate Barbara Mcleod's
upcoming retirement but very sad to sorry to see her go. Thanks to Barb for sharing her wisdom, enthusiasm and unique talents with our many students and grads over her 13 years here at VIU and Malaspina.
As a special honour, our Year 5 Post-Bacc students choreographed a flash mob dance to celebrate Barb and her retirement. Please visit YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpqXSHE7GL0
to see the performance which was filmed outside of the Library last April.
Her passion for teaching and learning will carry on in the daily practice of each of the students she has shared with. Thank you Barb!

Quotes from Our Graduates...
"...If I could say anything to all of the recent and future graduates in this budget restrained environment- it would be to leave yourself open to all the possibilities that a degree in Education can offer you- don't put yourself into a "high school Social Studies teacher" box- or any box for that matter! There are lots of rich and wonderful opportunities waiting for you to step into."
