twitter jockeyTwitter Jockeying Process Update:

Twitter Jockeying is based on an Educause piece on Google Jockeying, but I've coopted the phrase for a similarly structured Twitter activity. After our first-ever run of the concept at Canada MoodleMoot April 2009, I''ve cleaned up the process description & added some information to the process:

Twitter Jockeying: Take 2

Set-Up Activities:
Establish a back_channel or class twitter account—you will need a separate email address from your existing Twitter account’s email address—eg. jhengstler_back
Registered backchannel account on www.grouptweet.com
All users/members of the group, follow the backchannel on Twitter
Backchannel follows all members back (must be mutual follow for Group Tweet to be able to work it’s magic)
Computer to be used by the “Twitter Jockey” should have a Twitter client/interface that allows direct messages to be grouped for viewing (e.g. Tweetdeck, PowerTwitter add-on for Firefox, etc.)
Running the Twitter Jockey:
Members log into Twitter from mobile or computer devices
“Jockey” computer logins in on the backchannel account with the username & password for the Twitter account
Jockey should be using a Twitter interface that separates out direct messages & opens that section of the Twitter client so only direct messages are seen. (The backchannel will also be following all posts from the members in the “home” section, but you don’t want to see this when just using the account for jockeying during a class, presentation, session or workshop.)
Either instructor or student can Twitter jockey during session—sits at the computer/projector running Twitter
Caution: if student jockeys, any responses s/he post will come across as the instructors—should establish some trust first!
Members direct message the backchannel during class, session, workshop (eg. d jhengstler_back Can you show that last slide again? ) Messages sent must be direct messages The direct messaging allows for the broadcast-type delivery via GroupTweet to “subscribed” members
Useful when issues of power/authority differentials or introverted students uncomfortable speaking in groups.
Useful for annotated browsing, etc.
Transcript may then be downloaded & saved: Either through scrolling & copy/pasting text into a word processor, or using the www.tweetscan.com archive service.
Note: questions can be reviewed to improve & expand presentations, classess, workshops, etc. in their next iteration.
