Technology How To's for Education Faculty :
A Short-List of Useful Documents from VIU's IT Department & Your ED Tech
Your Computer, the Network & Printers
- To Find the Name of Your Computer (VIU IT): useful when reporting issues to the IT Helpdesk so that they know which computer needs to be fixed.
- How To Access the Shared Education Drive (EDTech): useful for accessing the data from the old website like course materials, pictures, etc. that you can then copy to your own U: drive, CD, Flashdrive, etc.; also useful for sharing large files among 2 or more people in the faculty.
- Installing a Network Printer (VIU IT): useful when you need to access a printer for the first time, or when you've lost a connection to a networked printer; the two faculty room printers are the HP4000 (356-229hp) and it's IP address is 192.168.27.233. The other printer is the 356-229SH and it's IP address is 192.168.27.246.
- Mapping a Network Drive (PC; VIU IT): useful when you need to map to your U: drive (virtual drive with your name) either at VIU or home; useful to map to any shared drive.

- Using Wireless Connections (VIU IT): useful for connecting to the WISP or S-WISP networks; (NOTE: if you're using VISTA, you should be using S-WISP); resources for "How to" are at the bottom of the page--so scroll way down.
- Scanning Images (VIU IT): useful for creating digital versions of hardcopy images; please respect copyright: read our Copyright Guidelines.
- Scanning Text (VIU IT): useful for creating digital versions of texts documents that are not currently available electronically; please respect copyright: read our Copyright Guidelines.
- Burning CDs with Windows XP (VIU IT): useful for burning music or other data onto CDs
- Audio Editing with Audacity (VIU IT): useful for editing sound files for creating podcasts, sound files, etc.; you will need to download the free Audacity software.
- Email Tutorials: for setting up Outlook on-campus, adding another mailbox (if you have permissions to it), using WebAccess, Archiving Your Email, Mailing & Distribution lists.
- Reduce Size of Email Box (Box is Over Size Limit): use this tutorial to archive your email and still have it accessible.
- Send an Email to Everyone in a Particular Course: useful to quickly and painlessly send a course-wide email to all enrolled students without knowing all their addresses.
