COMMUNICATING STUDENT SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
>Creating an eBook with Powerpoint (adapted from MyMala January 2, 2008 session)
While compared with much more sophisticated programs for developing electronic materials, Powerpoint is a relatively easy to use ubiquitous software that can be leveraged to produce a variety of electronic and hardcopy publications of student work. (This activity may also be used with OpenOffice's Impress--a free opensource presentation software similar to Powerpoint.) This session Powerpoint presents an activity with flexible applications to allow students to create original materials, demonstrate and/or showcase their skills or knowledge to others leveraging Powerpoint. An eBook built with Powerpoint could be used in presenting primary data such as personal interviews, archiving events, promotion, instructional materials, class assignments or presentations. This activity can be adapted to a range of technological expertise/knowledge for both the author of the work as well as his or her audience. Student generated materials could then be archived as course/student resources and/or built upon by other students, shared with others electronically, online, or in hardcopy. When converted to portable movie formats, these files could even be downloaded to mobile devices for viewing as mini-lessons.
Activities Instruction Sheet:Basic Example (pdf)
Process Exemplars: The following show a very rough outline of the process based on a very simple pirate story outline I developed for instructing elementary language arts students. On a personal note, this was targeted for my preliterate 4 yr. old son. Once I played it and played it for him, I had to create a second narrative for my 2 1/2 year old based on a story he drafted---see far bottom).
