Marian Riedel recently returned to Canada after a 15 year career in education in Asia. At VIU she will teach Secondary Social Studies Methods in the Post Baccalaureate program. Before joining the faculty at VIU Marian spent the majority of her career in Hong Kong working in various roles at two of the city’s top international schools. She completed her experience by running her own education and career counseling business providing support for students and parents to make educational choices.
Marian completed a Bachelor of Arts, with a double major in Geography and Anthropology prior to completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Goldsmiths’ College at the University of London in the UK where her focus was on Geography at the secondary level. Her Master’s of Arts is based in Curriculum and Teaching with a key focus on critical thought in education systems and sense of self for teaching professionals.
Marian has taught various Social Studies courses including geography, history, anthropology, sociology and psychology at both the middle and high school levels. As a critical thinker with a keen passion for traveling, Social Studies is not only an area of professional practice, it forms a core part of who she is as a human being.
Currently she enjoys spending time getting reacquainted with Canadian living and exploring Nanaimo with her family.
