Science Centres (Spring 2007)
An annual event, Science Learning Centres are created and implemented by Year 4 Education students in Bernie Krynowsky's Science Methods classes.SCIENCE CENTRES IN THE SCHOOLS (AND ON THE NEWS!)
These activity centres focus on science-based themes such as the environment, kitchen chemistry, forces and motion, etc. Considerable time, thought, energy, and money goes into creating them. They are part of a Malaspina tradition of making a contribution back to the elementary schools of the area. Twenty-five different schools have held the centres over the past 15 years. Last year we passed the 12,000 elementary students that have attended mark! This day is an excellent one for students, teachers, and school community. It is part of our payback to the schools and sponsors who devote so much time, thought, and energy in mentoring our student teachers.
This year, Uplands (March 6) and McGirr Elementary Schools (March 7), hosted the centres. The benefits of this day for our student teachers include opportunities to: teach a variety of students from grades K-7 in one day, deal with the realities of planning and implementing teaching strategies, practice student assessment and evaluation.
The events is also recognized and appreciated by the community. This year, A Channel news featured the centres on their March 7th evening newscast.
