Placement Sites

  • During your four week stay in Surabaya you will attend placements four days per week, as well as participate in weekly seminars. When possible, you will be partnered with Indonesian students in the placements. The following are possible placements sites:
    1. Pondok Hayat - is a home for single women who are pregnant and/or new mothers. This facility provides temporary shelter and care for the clientele. Last year students provided activities and support to both the mothers and the children.
    2.  Don Bosco - is an orphanage and day-care centre. This facility is funded by the Roman Catholic Church and the placement will provide opportunities to work in the orphanage with infants and/or toddlers and in the community day care centre with pre-schoolers.
    3. Amaryllis- is a privately-funded community based school that provides education to children with learning difficulties. The children attending the school are in grades 4-6 academically. The school recently received government funding to operate a small store to provide children with the opportunity to develop job skills. The practicum student attending this placement will provide learning support and recreational activities for the children in the program.
    4. SDN Klampis - is a state-funded elementary school of approximately 300 students in a working class area of Surabaya. SDN Klampis is presently piloting one of the city's first inclusive elementary school programs. The children range in ages from about 5-12. This school provides an opportunity to work with children and teachers to support the implementation of inclusive activities. This program will also provide opportunities for you to do some informal teaching (sharing your knowledge about Canada and its culture) and recreational activities.
    5. Jagir – is a street program funded and operated by the Roman Catholic Church. The program provides learning and recreational opportunities for children in the community who come from economically disadvantaged families. The program is offered in the evening and so provides a unique community-based study and volunteer work experience.

    6. Simo – is a street shelter funded and operated by the Roman Catholic Church. The shelter provides sleeping space, nutritious food, life skills and adult supervision to youth 13-18. The youth must attend school to remain at the shelter and work at the shelter operated ‘motor-bike wash’ in order to offset their living and schooling costs. This program is also offered in the evening and provides a unique community-based study and volunteer work experience.

    7. State Hospital Day Care – is operated by the State Hospital and provides full time child care services to the children of both the hospital staff and the community. The children and staff appreciate the opportunity to have exposure to North American learning experiences and activities and will share their own educational philosophies with you.

    2. Insurance: out-of-country medical insurance is required (no extra cost for students covered by VIU extended medical; approx. $50 for others) and flight cancellation insurance ($40 - $60) is highly recommended and must be purchased at the time you purchase your flight;
    3. Passport ($100 if you need a new one);
    4. Immunizations (visit the travel health clinic or your doctor ... cost may be around $100 but will depend on your personal history; if you are covered under VIU's extended medical, you can get reimbursed for most of these expenses);
