Volunteer Activities, Spring 2012
Below is a list of volunteer activities available through International Education.
Procedure:
- Email or phone the listed contact to make arrangements for your volunteer experience or to find out more about the activity at least ONE WEEK before you plan to participate.
- You are responsible to arrange the volunteer experience and show up at the times to which you have agreed. You are expected to actively participate in the volunteer activity.
- If you need to document your volunteer hours, keep track of them and have the supervisor of the activity sign for them. Education Abroad students - pick up your Co-curricular Activities Completion form from the reception desk in Building 255.
- Once you have completed your volunteer hours, ask the activity supervisor to sign off the Completion Form and submit it to the Education Abroad office (255/264). Please note: the supervisor is not required to sign the Completion Form if they feel you have not actively participated in the activity.

Learning Centre
Description: The Learning Centre (Bldg 255/Rm 175) is a drop-in resource room for lower level English learners. This would be to lead Conversation Club, help students practice speaking, and also to discuss English TV shows. Extra help is always welcome.
When: Monday 11:00 – 4:30; Tuesday 11:00 – 2:30; Wednesday 11:00 – 300; Thursday 11:30 – 4:30

English as a Second Language Classes
Description: Volunteers (native English speakers) needed for guiding small group conversation for students in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. to help students seeking assistance in the Learning Centre (for lower level English learners).
When: Monday-Friday at various times between 8:30am and 4:30pm

Various Activities
Description: Throughout the semester International Students participate in various activities. These can include daytrips to Victoria and Tofino, an evening of bowling, or weekend dayhikes. International students often appreciate these less formal opportunities to meet Canadian students and to practice English and share about their own culture while learning about Canadian culture.
When: Throughout the semester

Group Programs
Description: Groups of students from our partner universities in Japan and Korea come to VIU to study English and do a variety of recreation and cultural activities. Volunteers are needed to help on the activity program and in the ESL class as conversation partners.

Cultural Connections Buddy Program
Description: Cultural Connections (previously called LEAP) is a program that matches international students with Canadian students. This program enhances language and cultural exchanges, promotes inter-cultural understanding, and helps internationalize the campus. Cultural Connections provides an opportunity for casual interactions between participants.
When: Fall and Spring semesters
