Checklist for New Faculty and Staff
When you start a new position it can be a little unsettling, therefore, we feel it is important that you quickly feel informed, comfortable, supported, and prepared to handle the responsibilities of this new position. VIU holds annual employee orientations to assist our new employees in getting to know processes and the University community so they can become a key contributor to their department and the University community. Working together our aim is to provide an easy transition into your new work environment.
With your offer letter you received forms that you will need to complete and return to the Human Resources and Payroll offices (this will ensure that you get paid on time!).
Your orientation package also included forms and information including:
- Direct deposit form to be completed and returned to the Payroll Department
- Information on interest free computer loans
- BC Pension information
- Pay Parking information and purchase a pass if necessary
- Details on the Employee Portal so you can access your pay information
- Policies and Procedures including Intellectual Property Policy 31.13, Human Rights Policy 21.03, Procedure 41.12.003, Health and Safety Policy 41.09, Copyright Policy 31.02 and Purchasing Policy 42.31
Your Area Secretary, Supervisor or Department Chair will be able to assist you with:
- Arranging an email account
- Arranging a telephone & voicemail access
- Arranging for long distance telephone access
- Review the department organizational chart
- Ordering supplies
- Ordering business cards, if necessary (Printing & Duplicating)
- Getting Building Keys and Card Key access
- Photocopy code
Things you can do on your own:
- Your ID card can be procured from the Library, Building 305, Commons Area. A photo will be taken on site and this card will be used as a library card, building access card, and gym membership card
- Attend as many orientation sessions that are offered to new employees, some are required.
- Register for courses using the InVIU Intranet
- Familiarize yourself using the Campus Map
- Attend any Department Orientations that are offered
- Review your Collective Agreement, if applicable VIUFA, BCGEU, CUPE
- Become familiar with service departments and campus information (Bookstore, Technology @ VIU, Library, Print Shop, Purchasing and Employee Directory)
