ENGE 199  (3)  Engineering Fundamentals

An introduction to concepts in electrical, computer and mechanical engineering through a practical project to be undertaken by teams of students. The project will involve mechanical construction, sensing of mechanical quantity by electrical means, as well as interfacing to and programming of a simple micro-controller. Students will be required to acquire suitable components, demonstrate their designs, and write a report documenting their efforts. (0:1:2)

Prerequisite: PHYS 121 (may be taken concurrently) and either MATH 100 or MATH 121 (may be taken concurrently).

ENGM 141  (3)  Engineering Mechanics

Topics include force vectors, moments of forces, couples, distributed loads, equilibrium of a rigid body, structural analysis, internal forces, dry friction, kinematics of a particle, as well as force and acceleration. (4:0:0)

Prerequisite: PHYS 121 and either MATH 100 or MATH 121.

ENGR 101 Introduction to the Engineering Profession I

An introduction to Engineering. This course will consist of information sessions and seminars given by faculty and practicing engineers in various disciplines. Topics range from technical discussions and engineering practice through report writing and presentations. (0:1.5:0)

Prerequisite: None.

ENGR 102 Introduction to the Engineering Profession II

An introduction to Engineering. This course will consist of information and seminars on the profession and the particular skills and type of work done by practicing engineers in different disciplines. (0:1.5:0)

Prerequisite: ENGR 101.

ENGR 107  (1)  Preparation for Co-operative Education Employment

Preparation for first co-operative education experience through practical training in areas such as resume writing and interview skills. Credit will only be granted for one of CSCI 307 or ENGR 107. (0:1:0)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in PHYS 121 and min. "C+" in either MATH 100 or MATH 121.

ENGR 108  (9)  Co-operative Work Placement I

Individual students are carefully matched to employers who supervise them and evaluate their performance during paid work experience. VIU personnel conduct monitoring. Students will write a work placement report. Credit will only be granted for one of CSCI 308 or ENGR 108. (0:0:0)

Prerequisite: ENGR 107.

ENGR 112  (3)  Engineering Design I (Effective Sep 2013)

An introduction to the principles of engineering design with application to computer, electrical, mechanical and software engineering. This knowledge will be applied to practical projects to be undertaken by teams of students. (1:0:2)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in Principles of Physics 12; minimum "B" in Principles of Mathematics 12 or Pre-calculus 12; or minimum "B-" in both Principles of Mathematics 12 and Calculus 12; or minimum "B-" in both Pre-calculus 12 and Calculus 12.

Co-requisites: PHYS 121 and either MATH 100 or MATH 121.

ENGR 121  (3)  Engineering Design II (Effective Jan 2013)

Principles of engineering design with application to computer, electrical, mechanical and software engineering. This knowledge will be applied to practical projects to be undertaken by teams of students. (1:0:2)

Prerequisite: ENGE 199 or ENGR 112.

ENGR 150  (3)  Engineering Graphics (Ends Nov 2011)

Topics include lettering, linework, use of instruments, orthographic projection, revolution, orthographic and pictorial sketching and drawings, spatial analysis, two- and three-dimensional matrix transformations. Selected topics are covered in the AutoCAD lab. (3:0:2)

Prerequisite: Min. "C+" in Principles of Physics 12 and min. "C+" in either Principles of Mathematics 12 or MATH 152. Note: It is recommended that students take MATH 141 concurrently.
