PROJECT DESCRIPTION
To construct an International Centre for Sturgeon Studies (ICSS) at Vancouver Island University (VIU) that will support high quality and innovative research focusing on sturgeon biology, management and hatchery technology for enhancement/restoration and commercial purposes.
This research will aid in conserving and restoring endangered sturgeon populations worldwide. The conservation of these important fish will require an integrated and collaborative research approach through field and laboratory studies of which the facility will be a key component of support. While the focus is on sturgeon, the concept has broadened to be a freshwater fish physiology lab that will provide the capacity for new research initiatives that examine the potential of alternative fish species for aquaculture. This is a cost-effective way of maximising the benefits of the ICSS and of improving the overall aquatic research capacity in the Faculty of Science and Technology (more specifically in the departments of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Resource Management, and Biology).
The Centre will facilitate cooperation between conservation and enhancement activities at the regional, national, and international levels. To that end, a research team has been assembled that includes world-class and emerging new scientists from across Canada, the United States and internationally (Russia, Germany, Iran, France and Italy).
The ICSS will help bring together a cluster of researchers and others interested in sturgeon conservation from universities, government, First Nations, industry and non-governmental organizations. VIU is committed to working with, and supporting through research, groups in British Columbia dedicated to sturgeon conservation. The Centre's Advisory Committee will include members of these important groups.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- support research initiatives that address the conservation and protection of sturgeon species worldwide
- work towards ensuring that viable commercial and sport fisheries for sturgeon remain sustainable
- promote environmentally responsible aquaculture of sturgeon through land-based, closed containment facilities
- provide training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students interested in sturgeon ecology, physiology and management
- bring together a world-class research team from Canada, the US, Europe and Asia
- provide a research node for a cluster of similar sturgeon research groups around the world
- assist our partners in academia, government, industry, First Nations and Environmental NGOs in their sturgeon research efforts
- host workshops and seminars on a variety of sturgeon topics, open to both stakeholders and the general public
- provide public education opportunities through educational displays and school tours
