Phase 1 Under Construction [Transit Exchange Only]
Project Status: Complete!Phase 1 [Transit Exchange Only]
Construction begins August 16, 2010! Majority of work to be complete by September 6, 2010. |
Work on this project, which is highlighted in VIU’s Campus Master Plan, began on Monday, August 16th; the major components of work will be complete prior to the start of the fall semester.
The New Transit Exchange will be built at the current location of Parking Lot “P”, between Building 255 (International) and Building 300 (Cafeteria). The scope of this project has been modified from the original design. Specifically, this first phase of the project will move the exchange from its current location and improve infrastructure. Other aesthetic pieces related to the design of the exchange will be developed in the future as funding becomes available.
Facilities Services and Campus Development would like to thank the VIU Community and the public in advance for your patience as we take this exciting step towards the development of our Campus Master Plan.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
As part of the University Centre, the Transit Exchange and University Boulevard will contribute to the development of a more compact and functionally efficient campus, improved access and servicing, and to the introduction of physical features and organization typical of university campuses.
The Transit Exchange will provide a point of arrival on the campus and is a key feature of the sustainable transportation plans of the Regional District of Nanaimo and the University. It includes enhanced facilities and services designed to reduce private vehicle traffic to the campus, thus enhancing VIU’s sustainable practices and reducing the carbon footprint of both the University and the Region. The Transit Exchange (including approach routes) will be planned in conjunction with the Regional District of Nanaimo Transportation Services and the City of Nanaimo.
New access to Third Street will intersect with a redeveloped Fourth Street, to become “University Boulevard”. This new main entrance will provide improved access for all types of travel to and from the campus including bicycles and foot traffic. This development will be coordinated with City of Nanaimo Development Services to achieve maximum consistency and amalgamation of community demographics and commuter routes.
