Bursaries

Bursary applications will be available in our "Applications" section, approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the deadline date. Mail or take completed bursary applications to the Financial Aid & Awards Office by the specified deadline dates.

Bursaries will be selected based on minimum course load requirements, grade point average requirements, specific donor criteria and information provided on the application form. The value of some bursaries may vary dependent on investment returns.


Section I

The application for the following Tuition Bursary will be available on-line in our "Applications" section in early July each year. Deadline to apply:  October 31st. (Note: If the 31st falls on a weekend or holiday, the preceding Friday will become the deadline)

Vancouver Island University Tuition Bursary Program

The Vancouver Island University Tuition Bursary program has been established through institutional means to provide tuition relief for students with the greatest financial need attending this institution. Tuition bursaries of $400* (single students) and $600* (students with children) are available to students currently in receipt of government student loan funding. Funds will be applied directly to tuition fees for the spring semester. In allocating bursaries and determining the amounts, grade point average (GPA) will be considered. Refer to the Vancouver Island University Tuition Bursary application form for further information on eligibility requirements. *amounts may vary

The application for the following bursaries will be available on-line in our "Applications" section in early November each year. Deadline to apply: January 31st. Funds issued in March. (Note: If the 31st falls on a weekend or holiday, the preceding Friday will become the deadline)

GENERAL BURSARIES: NOT SPECIFIC TO PROGRAM

Allan & Edna Brown Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available for financial need to students enrolled in a university program, and who are attending the Cowichan Campus.

Canadian Federation of University Women - Nanaimo Bursary

1 bursary, $800; Available to deserving female students enrolled in any degree program.

Chilco Bursaries

4 bursaries, $500 each; Available for financial need to female students in any post-secondary program.

City of Parksville Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available for financial need to residents of the Parksville/Qualicum area.

Coastal Community Credit Union Bursaries

3 bursaries, $500 each; Available for financial need to residents of School District #68.

Cowichan Campus Endowment Bursaries

2 bursaries, $250 each; Available for financial need to students attending the Cowichan Campus, who will be continuing studies at VIU.

Cowichan Dogwoods Chapter of IODE Bursary

1 bursary, $1,000; Available for financial need to students who are residents of the Cowichan Valley, (Duncan, Mill Bay, Shawnigan, NOT Lake Cowichan or Chemainus). Preference will be given to those attending the Cowichan Campus.

Cowichan High School 1952 Graduating Class Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available for financial need and good academic standing, to students enrolled at the Cowichan Campus.

CUPE Local 1858 Bursaries

2 bursaries, $500 each; Available to full-time students who show financial need, scholastic ability, and proof of union affiliation. Available to members, or students in the immediate family of members in good standing with CUPE Local 1858. (Additional bursary available in March - see Section III for details).

Doris Fineday Memorial Bursaries

2 bursaries, $300 each; Available to First Nations students, based on financial need. One bursary issued to a student a Trades & Applied Technology program, and one issued to a student in a university program.

Dr. E. Margaret Fulton Bursary

1 bursary, $250; Available to single parents, or First Nations students who are residents of the Cowichan Valley, and are enrolled in Bachelor of Arts with a major in Women's Studies. Preference will be given to students attending the Cowichan Campus.

Dr. Grace Elliott Nielsen Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available to First Nations students in first year of a university program who are not able to access band funding.

Dr. Prem Shanker Bursaries

2 bursaries, $300 each; Available for financial need to continuing students in any program, who show satisfactory progress. Preference will be given to members of the following religions: Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, or Jain.

Edna Lavina Fetterly Bursaries

4 bursaries, $1,000 each; Available to students in any program, with selection based on financial need.

Erica Murphy (nee d'Alessandro) Athletic Bursary

1 bursary, $1,000; Available for financial need, to students who participate in VIU Athletics.

Frank Ney Memorial Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available for financial need and academic ability to students continuing with their studies, and who have graduated from a secondary school in District 68.

Frank Roy Smith Memorial Bursaries

2 bursaries, $1,000 each; Available for financial need to students in any program, with preference given to students in ABE.

George & Elizabeth Annand Bursaries

Number available varies, amounts vary; Available for financial need to students enrolled in any post-secondary program.

Johnson-Valente Family Bursary

1 bursary, $1,000; Available to students enrolled in any post-secondary program, with selection based on financial need. Preference will be given to those whose parents have no formal post-secondary degree.

Keith Hodgson Memorial Bursary

1 bursary, $1,000; Available to students in any program, who are permanent residents of School District #68, and who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to Business students.

Kinette Club of Nanaimo Bursaries

2 bursaries, $1,000 each; Available for financial need, to female students enrolled in a program which prepares them for working with people with special needs. Preference will be given to daughters of Kinette / Kinsmen members.

MP Jarman Geological Bursary

1 bursary, $1,000; Available for financial need to students enrolled in Geology courses. Preference will be given to third or fourth year students. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by January 31.

Nora Fulton Gibson Memorial Bursaries

2 bursaries, $1,000 each; Available for financial need to students attending Cowichan Campus.

Pieter de Reuver Foundation Bursaries

35 bursaries, $1,000 each; Available for financial need to students enrolled in any full-time post-secondary program at VIU, and who are residents of the Parksville-Qualicum area. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by January 31. Funds issued in March.

Remembrance Bursary - Royal Canadian Legion Branch 257

1 bursary, $1,000; Available to VIU History students with financial need, who demonstrate a particular interest in Canadian military history. Available to children and grandchildren of Canadian veterans, ex-service personnel and currently serving armed forces personnel. Preference will be given to students who have participated in the "Letters & Images" project, the "Western Front" field school, or who have been, or are currently enrolled in "WWI" or "Canada in WWI" History courses. Recipient to be selected in conjunction with VIU History department faculty.

Rick Davidson Memorial Bursary

1 bursary, $250; Available for financial need to students enrolled in any post-secondary program, who are residents of the Cowichan Valley.

Vancouver Foundation Bursaries

A number of bursaries, amounts vary; Available to students requiring additional financial assistance through funds administered by the Vancouver Foundation.

Vancouver Island North Bursary

1 bursary, $1,000; Available to students with financial need. Preference will be given to students from northern Vancouver Island, (north of Campbell River).

Vancouver Island Trails Information Society Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available to students involved in outdoor recreation, who are enrolled in Recreation & Tourism, Resource Management Officer Technology, or Environmental Studies programs. Recipient will also receive a copy of their choice of one of the Society's three books: Hiking Trails 1, 2 or 3.

Vancouver Island University Ambassadors Bursary

1 bursary, $350; Available for financial need, to students enrolled in any post-secondary program (includes Trades & Applied Technology programs). Bursary will alternate between first and second year students.

Vancouver Island University Employees Bursaries

A number of bursaries, amounts vary; For financial need.

Vancouver Island University Endowment Bursaries

A number of bursaries, amounts vary; For financial need.

Victoria Foundation Ruth Elina Carlson Bursaries

6 bursaries, $1,000; Available to Canadian born students, who are enrolled in any of the following areas: Arts, Science, Education, Humanities, Business Administration or Technology. Selection will be based on demonstrated financial need.

VIU Centennial Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available for financial need to second-year students. Must be permanent residents of School District #68. Preference will be given to students in Business programs.

Zonta Club of Nanaimo Bursary

1 bursary, $500; For financial need and academic achievement; available to female students enrolled in Science, Education, or Women's Studies at the Nanaimo Campus, who will be returning to VIU in the Fall semester.

CUPE Local 1858 Bursary

1 bursary, $500; Available to full-time students who show financial need, scholastic ability, and proof of union affiliation. Available to members, or students in the immediate family of members in good standing with CUPE Local 1858. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards Office by March 31.

Gwladys Brewster Memorial Bursary

1 bursary, $2,000; Awarded to a female student, based on academic achievement and financial need, who has successfully completed one year at Vancouver Island University, and who will be continuing her studies at an accredited College or University in the coming year. Apply to Financial Aid & Awards office by March 15.
