VANCOUVER ISLAND UNIVERSITY – FISH/AQUA JOBS

STUDENT JOB TITLES:   1) Fish and Invertebrate Culturist

Work tasks and responsibilities. 

 1.  Maintain warm and cold water hatcheries at Vancouver Island University (VIU) including Chase River Hatchery. Duties include: feeding fish and invertebrates, collection of water quality, fish growth, and mortality data, and cleaning tanks, filters and other fish culture equipment.

2) Keep all applicable written and electronic databases updated.

3) Maintain sodium sulfite stock baths.

4) Assist technical staff with hatchery maintenance, small construction projects and habitat work.

5) Assist with wild fish research projects (requires fishing and fishing licenses).

6) Assist with cleaning all hatchery and field equipment.

7) Assist spawning and rearing sturgeon.

8) Assist with hatchery and laboratory equipment inventory.

9) Assist technologists or faculty with tank monitoring for research projects (if needed).

10) Assist technologists by helping to move equipment into the International Centre for Sturgeon Studies.

11) Conduct tours as required.

12) Assist with monitoring and data collection of sturgeon research project.

13) Assist with washing dishes and laboratory glassware cleanup as required.

14) Participate in recruiting new students if requested.  This may involve day-trips with faculty.

15) The Habitat Assistant (Position 2) must submit a written final data report for the cutthroat trout research project and summarize pink salmon creel census data.

16) Assist with updating the Fish-Aqua homepage.  This may include production of videos, writing short articles, and other aspects of producing web pages.

17) Participate in the implementation of the Nile Creek – Qualicum Bay Stream Improvement project. This may include helping with fisheries field assessments, installing and/or downloading data loggers, and other equipment with VIU Technologists, Trout Unlimited Canada Biologist, Nile Creek Enhancement Society volunteers, and DFO advisors.

To apply for either (or both) of these positions: Applicants must be in good physical condition, have a Class 5 Drivers License with a driving record (acceptable to VIU) and hold a valid first-aid certificate. In addition, recreational fishing is an important component of these jobs so applicants should be able to use a fly rod to collect cutthroat trout.
