Biography
Don Furnell has been with the Vancouver Island University since 1987 and arrived from a diverse background which included work as a polar bear biologist (Furnell and Schweinsburg 1984), fish population biologist (Furnell and Brett 1986, Furnell 1981), and fish metabolic physiologist (Furnell 1987). During his career he has been the Vice-President of operation for a large publicly traded salmon aquaculture company (Hagensborg Marine farms) a consultant to the aquaculture industry, the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission, the International Development Research Centre, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and other organizations. His current research interests include fish reproductive endocrinology, breeding and rearing a diversity of fish species, sex and chromosome manipulation in fish and simulation modeling of fish production systems. Don teaches the finfish aquaculture courses, and fish population dynamics to both degree and diploma students as well as being involved with several project courses involving fish rearing.
