TITLE: Student Research Assistant - three positions (2 FT, 1 PT)

SALARY: $14.00/hr (+ 10% benefits)
These positions are funded by the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

START: May 3, 2010

DURATION: 16 weeks, 35 hr/wk (Some flexible hours)

CLOSING DATE: April 23, 2010 (12:00 pm)

DUTIES: Assist the NSERC research program of Drs. D. Barker, S. Jones and K. Garver examining the potential role of sea lice as a carrier (vector) of viral and bacterial diseases of salmon. Student duties include sea lice rearing, fish disease challenges, virus and bacteria diagnostics (e.g., PCR, API 20E) plus bacteriological media prep. Position includes working at VIU and PBS, plus frequent field sampling trips to salmon farms and fish processing sites. (Great opportunity for fish health research experience and FISH or BIOL 491 projects.)

QUALIFICATIONS:
VIU STUDENTwith successful completion of several Fisheries & Aquaculture or Biology courses. Preference will be given to students that have completed one (or several) among: AQUA 241/341, BIOL 202, 210, 211, 315, 332, 333, 334, 415. Candidates who have not completed these courses, but have demonstrated excpetional performance in other related courses and/or have proficient lab skills will also be considered.
