Message from the Program Chair

Doug Corrin Welcome to the VIU Forestry Department website.

The VIU Forestry Department has recently undergone a face-lift. The most significant change is an update of our course offerings. We have expanded our coverage of forest ecology, integrated resource management, forest hydrology and riparian management. But we have maintained our foundational courses in engineering, silviculture and forest biometrics upon which our reputation in the forestry sector in BC was built.

Our presentation materials and website have been redesigned to better communicate critical information to prospective students. If that’s you, we hope this helps you to decide if forestry is right for you. We have also improved the support material for our current students to better enable them to attain their educational goals.

What society expects from forestland is ever evolving. In decades past, timber was the mainstay of forest management. In recent years values such as wildlife and fish habitat, biodiversity, recreation and water quality have come to the forefront. Today, how forest management can mitigate climate change is part of the conversation. If these topics interest you, then you should consider a career in forestry.

I invite you to explore our website or attend one of our information sessions. Please contact me if you have any questions about our programs.

Sincerely,

Doug Corrin, Program Chair
